October 20, 2008
Notes:
1) Cuts in the AUD between songs and at the beginning of Minglewood
2) Having already matrixed up to Jack-A-Roe with AUD #1, I noticed there were skipping flaws from Jack-A-Roe to end of set. Bertrando graciously provided a new, unscathed transfer to complete the matrix (AUD #2).
3) Ramble On Rose in the SBD has a brief "phasing" defect.
4) Some occasional, light "digi-fuzz" in the AUD
5) Vocal issues in the sound system at beginning of Bertha
6) SBD source was approximately 0.4% slow.
7) A hand-full of "all-timers" in this show.

Subject: Best of Run
One of the best of '77 and a great show for which to have a matrix (and other options). The next night has been oft-noted, but for sheer level of playing I give this the nod as a best-of-year candidate. Really, setlist faves make the only difference - they are both ridiculously good.
First Set. They are so auspiciously in the groove right from the start of Minglewood. Sugaree is good, but great in bursts. The next couple are quotidian, though Jer jumps in on the choruses for Mexicali Blues. The then-new pairing of Passenger/Sunrise really worked. Donna is at her peak on the latter; Jer steps back more than most '77s. Brown Eyed is yanked from the ether into powerful existence. It's All Over Now is as solid as a square box, settling like a good meal. On dessert, Jack-A-Roe is smoother than pudding; and with a Philly phunk chaser. The set enders are enough to leave 'em happy for the break.
Second Set. The mic cutouts during Bertha are just on the SBD and weren't front-of-house, so try the AUDS or MTX. It's tentative, as is Good Lovin'. But they are back on the captain's deck for Ramble and Estimated. This sets up for an Eyes that boots all brands of butt. It builds slowly, inexorably higher and higher...can you take the zenith? From there the set goes on a streak, steamrolling all the way from a lone-verse The Other One, to a dynamic Wharf Rat, through the tempo-increasing encore.
1st Set: B+
2nd Set: A
Overall = 5 stars
Highlights:
Minglewood Blues - auspiciously satisfying
Sunrise - an ace example
Brown Eyed Women - solidifying from the ether
It's All Over Now - a good meal
Jack-A-Roe - creamy as puddin'
Eyes of the World> - from here on the set is dynamic & supernal
SOURCES: The best alternative to the official release is the Seamons matrix (for the energy). The miller_25621 is the original, unedited SBD. The bertrando_troy_miller_smith_sirmick is a new mastering of the Sandy Troy AUD that used to circ.
Subject: you had me at "wake up to find out"
terrific show. 5 stars all the way.
Subject: shake it
Subject: Another masterful '77 performance
Subject: Very Nice
We are all going home....it is nice to know I am not alone....
Comforts me soul ... like villagers waiting for the timely show-up of Ganja Joe ...Punk says at first... "Don't see no outside world from where I sit man" ... I laugh and choose to ask him to accompany me a bit in this walk through life...
But ... I know dis Irie ... Dread laughs at hurricane gales ... so i say ... "Hey Joe ... sitting rests the untamable" ... His no-front-teeth griN reminds me of smoking Big-Fat-Cigar-Sized doobies with my old running buddies Rooster-Face and Stumbles....
He then rocks the goddam canoe .... "Dat untamable gotta know how to swim too though... yah man..."
Subject: First show . . .
Living in SF for 1 high school semester, school's almost out and I'll be moving back to LA soon . . . a school friend sez "You can't say you've lived in San Francisco unless you've A) Seen the Grateful Dead, and B) been to Winterland. & Guess what, the Dead are at Winterland tonight!"
So off I went, for one of the best live music experiences I've ever had. On the floor you could feel the music through your feet!
Subject: I Think it's Funny....
As I've stated before, I'm not really a 1st set guy. So I start listening to the show and it's okay. Nothing too spectacular going on, and then the 2nd set starts up. Unleash the hounds. The whole set from start to finish is just fantastic. I believe this may be my favorite Wharf Rat.
The Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Drums > The Other One > Wharf Rat will put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Give it a listen, it will make your day.
5 stars for the 2nd set alone and the sound quality is outstanding.
Peace.
