Thanks Chris for this amazing Matrix. I realize there are a few flubs on Jers vocals but the playing was excellent all three nights, this being my favorite. Sound is spot on 👌🏼 this is the one for this uptown run.

Really digging this show thanks to this AMAZING sounding matrix. I had been previously listening to the sbd on the archive and then I decided to check out other sources since it felt too vocal heavy and had no "vibe." I heard the aud that this matrix sourced and that felt kind of distant. But the sound of this matrix blew me away! This recording sounds as good as if not better than the bulk of the stuff from the vault that's officially released. On the playing front, it's a great show. Not without it's share of slight missteps and forgotten lyrics but the Scarlet > Fire and Estimated > Eyes were both nice jams!

I have not listened to this cover to cover yet but I can tell you this was not a good night for Jerry. Alabama is bad and it stays that way. The first set was not meant to end with Minglewood something was wrong with Jerry. Scarlet Fire is really bad. There is a line between artistry and improvisation/dissonance and bad musicianship. This crosses that line. 2 stars only for sound quality.

This is a decent recording of a very representative show from the early 80's. Also the last time I would see the Dead after attending just a few 70's era shows. I was never a Fan Boy even tho I collected their albums, and I tend to judge them very critically compared to other bands such as Allman Brothers Band, etc. I prefer tight, well performed shows just out of respect for the music and the fans who pay cold hard cash to attend concerts but what the hell, this is the Dead and they like it loose sometimes LOL. But this is a pretty good show compared to others I have seen. Never knew what the fuss was about over Donna ( I liked her) and it was Brent whose raspy vocals I utterly loathed! LOL

GREAT show! I have a soft spot for 1981 cuz i cut my teeth on "Dead Set"! This is a great show with a little of everything. Some ballads, some rockers, and everyone shines a little.

Here you have what becomes the standard formula for most shows in the 80's (without 99% of the flubs that become common as the decade goes on)
Sure wish they had kept Alabama in the rotation with more regularity it was such a rockin tune and gave Bobby a running start.
A first set that builds in intensity (And only Jerry could build intensity with a ballad) includes a rare Minglewood set closer.
A classic Scarlet>Fire>Est>Eyes
Steady drums and a pretty trippy space with like Elephants or whales or something?
NFA> Wharf> Sugar Mag (Got weary of NFA to close shows but like it here coming out of space.
Also fun to open a 2nd set)
Dang BRENT does have some out there backing vocals during Wharf Rat!
There is at least one complaint from a reviewer about the 3 minute encore but it's Don't Ease IMO-I would have traded a Baby Blue for a Don't Ease every once in a while.

This was a great show. Called home to tell my mom i see her in 2 weeks. When the boys hit N.Y.C at MSG. She tolled me a girl name Peggy called. Well I fell in love with a girl name Peggy. I know it was love at the time we meet. Last time I saw her was SF 4 days before after a Jerry show at the Key Stone,SF. We said good bye. I had just spent the last 5 weeks with in Santa Cruz. And I really fell in love with her. So I called her and she was back in Boston. So we where to meet again. On her 19th birthday. We meet and off to the Boston show than to Hartford for her birthday 3/15/81. We have now been together for almost 31 years. With 2 great kid. Chris 25 and Jessie 23 and she making me a grandfather. Peggy I love you more than words can tell. The uptown was one of the best shows I have been to out of 258. Thank you the Grateful Dead for helping me find my LoveLight. My kids have been to shows and both love the Band. Hope the music keeps coming for many years to come. Thanks Richard.C

I'm a much bigger fan of the following night's show. However, being an '81 show, this one has some very good moments as well. The most memorable part for me was the post-drums NFA>Wharf Rat.
As they say, take what you need [of this show] and leave the rest :)

great stuff! 2nd show of a 3 night run. 2nd show of the tour. Brent shines. I really love his B3 playing. I knew some older heads in Chicago at one time and these shows were mythical to them. something having to do with Phil being his usual boozed out self at the time and running late getting to the gig. I don't know if there's any truth to it, just thought i'd add to the myth that is the GratefulDead.

been a fan of this music since high school (early 1990s). never caught the original dead lineup live, but i always loved the music. i would've loved to have seen a show with Jerry, but unfort. i didn't.
recently, id been able to see two of the original members in their current tour, i felt very speacial feelings between crowd and band that i've never felt before in concert. organized chaos? for sure. i felt to be part of a bigger picture and part of the music of what seemed to be timeless senses. among the chaos, there was an extremely human element i felt, especially the need to feel physically close to the ones you love/you're with, since it's so chaotic.
THAT SAID, i took my wife to a following show, giving me tears thinking about it now, but i just wanted to hold her and be as phyically close to her as possible the whole time.
that's what it's been for me.

Dear friend penguin777:
I find myself attempting to answer a question whose nature is often referred to by the ancient Sages as: "To those who know, no answer is necessary; to those who do not know, no answer is possible." Nevertheless, I will attempt to answer your question. What makes people go so crazy over the Grateful Dead and their music? The answers are many, but include this one: the Grateful Dead provided the "soul fuel" for the major events in the lives of so very many of us, while the music and the lyrics kept us on our toes, kept us thinking about what we were living and why we were living it. The energy was good, the music great, the band there for us (a fact for which most of us, myself included, are quite grateful indeed). Again, if you do not understand, a quick note by me probably won't make you understand; but the Grateful Dead were and are an integral part of what we lived, what we live now, and who we are.
Beyond that, all I can say is this: "If you get confused, listen to the music play....." :-)
