Subject: Old skool Dead and Vegas
Subject: Old skool Dead and Vegas
Back in 1983 Las Vegas was almost a dumpy little town out in the Nevada desert. I recall taking Southwest Air hopper flights to/from Phoenix the day of the show. We stayed in the Aladdin. What a strange scene for the Dead. All afternoon and into the night "paging Mr. Jack Straw, Mr Jack Straw to the white courtesy phone please", "Paging Mickey Hart, Mickey Hart to the white courtesy phone please"! Every band member, every character from Dead songs you could imagine was being paged- I do recall "Stella Blue, Miss Stella Blue", and an echo from the past, "paging Mountain Girl, Miss Mountain Girl". It really was entertaining!
At the beginning of my night I was at the door to the theater about 5 persons from the front and we had a discussion with the 30 something security guard before he let us in. "Is it sold out tonight?"-"Yes". "Are we the rowdiest crowd ever for this theatre?"
"Are you kidding- we had Van Halen in here last week, their fans destroyed a bunch of stuff, you folks seem much more mellow than that." So funny. As a result of being close to the front of the line, once we were allowed in I was forced into an area on the floor which wasn't near my ticket.
Six years is along time for a project, but having been there, I can say kudos to Charlie are warranted.

In 1983 there was only old Las Vegas and the Aladdin was an aging relic of a gilded past. My recollections are not as clear as the previous review for similar reasons, I suspect. I do remember that it was a hard venue to record in. I also remember being struck by the stark juxtaposition of tie-dyed deadheads and leisure suited casino regulars. I also recall a silver dollar slot machine near the entrance to the casino that a deadhead pulled, and won, to our great amusement. It was a decidedly weird scene, even for a dead show.

Seeing the Dead in Vegas was completely absurd. There was only a bit of nervous vending and such in the parking lot due to police presence, and dancing in the theatre was prohibited. Brother Essau was a train wreck and the first set was pretty chaotic in general, but the second set was pretty good. But what I remember most of all, all these years later, was the ridiculous leisure suite which Phil was wearing, made even more silly because he was so over-weight and bloated back in those days. Or maybe I was tripping my balls off and imagined the whole thing.

Which is not a bad thing, being a new song and all, but it's funny how Bobby says they're repeating a song played the previous night (in Arizona) because they need to practice it, indeed.

This was the show I lost my shit at. The scene out front of the Aladdin that day, before the show, was nuts. Betty Boop blotter was generously handed out. Did one hit too many ... Ended up being the "Hell Trip" with Jerry turning into a scary looking 'bot. It was boiling hot, and the subterranean venue was a trip. Dudes with tatooed snakes on their faces wandered around the casino as the show went on. The funniest thing I remember after pulling it together, was the deadheads (all tripping -or so I thought) streaming out of the auditorium and playing the blackjack tables. One dude started winning like crazy and was throwing handfulls of chips into the deadhead crowd. We all started playing with his chips and drinking free, ice-cold Heinekens (as long as we played). Hilarious, trippy, scary and memorable. Thanks for the show Charlie
