This was my favorite show attended in 1986 and the tapes that I had in my hands only days afterward proved that what I was hearing that night was not "a hot show via wishful thinking". Relative to this, 1986 was, overall, one of the weakest years of performing for The Dead and, at that time, none of us could have anticipated the astonishing and ever-so-welcome band re-awakening to follow in '87. All of my show experiences in '86 were packed with youthful bliss and are remembered with love & fondness, but the music (particularly on tape) proved kinda weak.
Nonetheless, this show is very, very strong from start to finish. I KNOW that ALL in attendance were surprised by "Space" > "Morning Dew" wrapping up the 2nd set; we talked about it for days afterward. "Dew" is a superb version, relative to the time, with more than enough moxy to gloss over any rough spots. "Half-Step" is my favorite opener and this one did/does not disappoint. "High Time", despite a couple of rocky moments, was a real highlight for me. The following "Lost Sailor" (last-ever) > "Saint Of Circumstance" is also worthy of attention.
I got some great pics from way down front during the 1st set, then spent the 2nd set at the top of the Spectrum, in the very last row, dead center, enjoying some Kind with our generous neighbors and being totally blown away by the band. My buddy for this show was the late, great Bill Carpenter. Love ya, my friend....Rest In Peace....
Incidentally, this entire show can be viewed on YouTube....!!
There's not much else you're gonna find in this year to compete with the greatness of this performance. Definitely worth the download. I prefer this Joe D'Amico recording to any of the others uploaded here (with deep respect & love to ALL the tapers and their efforts) because it TOTALLY SOUNDS LIKE the Spectrum and can really transport me back through the years!!
I'm stingy with my 5-star ratings, but this one absolutely earns it via the band's performance, song selection and Joe's recording!!

This was the second time they played Box of Rain after they brought it back in Hampton earlier that year, and this version is really, really sweet. Phil's voice is super strong, and his singing is unusually good. Jerry's playing is just fantastic -- he's really doing some sweet stuff, and the whole band is into, as is the audience. Tremendous energy, and worth the download for it alone. That the rest of the show is also great is just a bonus :)
