Subject: This show needs more love!
Subject: This show needs more love!
Exhibit A: Playin > UJB > Jam > D/S > China Doll > Playin
If I had to choose a single word to describe the second set, that word would be "jangly". The boys are really loose and fluid, and the music has a lot of attack to it. They definitely had it going on this night -- they're deep in the zone.
The Playing starts off strong, works through the verses, and then takes off into the deep. This version is muscular rather than sinewy, and it muscles its way into some pretty interesting spaces. Tension builds until they bring the jam to a wild, ragged, and inspired peak -- really unusual stuff for a Playin opener. After this peak, they pick themselves up and keep going, albeit more melodically, arriving at UJB.
The UJB that follows is as driven a version as I can remember, with a fantastic (!!) version of the 7/4 jam; this version always reminds me of horses galloping across a plain. It's very transportive, and despite being longer than usual it ends too soon; I wish it went on for another five minutes...
The 6 minute full band jam that follows UJB is also unique and very inspired; it's not just another jam out of UJB. Jerry makes a full break with UJB and starts a new musical figure, which the rest of the band picks up on, and it leads to a very chord-driven jam -- again, jangly and bright, and very full sounding. It's wonderful :-)
The China Doll starts building about 2 minutes into Space, and Jerry isn't fucking around. If you're the type to skip Space, I suggest grabbing this one for the extended intro to China Doll, which is really great. The China Doll lives up to its intro, and Jerry really plays his heart out on it, and gives it a sort of Ennio Morricone feel to it. The vocals aren't quite up to the playing, but are also quite heartfelt.
And then it's back into Playin', whose reprise is well deserved and well played. It isn't 11-4-77, but it's a fitting end to this great suite of music.
The rest of the show is good (Lovelight especially), but the above is pretty special stuff, and well worth a listen.
