Subject: B+ show/A+audience recording
The Baby Blue seems to be Jerry’s attempt to set the ship right after a truly disastrous Don’t Think Twice that clearly had no rehearsal or previous discussion. The attempt is not particularly successful however as Dylan attempts to perform backing vocals and co-lead vocals at once. The Dead tell the crowd to “say bye” and so Dylan leaves and they keep it close to the ground with the next four. Don’t Ease is pretty rollicking.
Second set is the first true second set they do after the one-set show in Minneapolis on the Dylan part of the tour. This trend thankfully continued for the rest of the tour. This opens with an average China>Rider into a strong Playin’ that seems cut short when Bobby goes into Desolation Row. Even today, the move seems crass (Dylan fans had surely arrived by then), but it was undoubtably done b/c Jerry isn’t present and I assume was ill backstage. In any case, most hard core, superstitious fans of that period would probably be thinking “oh great. Now Dylan won’t do it.”. (Spoiler alert: Bob Dylan will not play Desolation Row that evening in Akron.) The rest of the show is fairly average until it somewhat falls apart near the end. A B/B+ show overall.
