Subject: Pure Spring '87 Joy
Subject: Pure Spring '87 Joy
I am starting to think Spring '87 is one of the best periods for the Dead in the 80s. These shows are spot on almost every night. They are tight, crisp, and so well-played -- maybe not long and trippy -- but powerpacked and vibrant. What they embody is a kind of special Dead joy and energy that is pure and beautiful. This is joyous Dead unadulterated -- the whole tour. There are stronger shows on this tour, but this one exceeds much of the fall output and '88 as well.
Just listen to the "Black Peter." Come on folks, it is played right on -- so well executed. The space -- never my thing -- is a chiller and it becomes something of a build up to "The Other One" from the moment it starts, so it has a kind of unity and melodious arc that many other spaces lack.
There's not a sour note here; not a moment where high energy wanes. Jerry plays so well.
Spring '87 is hardly ordinary. Start listening and comparing.
Fine audience recording -- I think better than the others from this night.
