OK I'm biased, but you always remember your first. I was turned onto the Dead in 1987 while living in Keystone employee housing. The cage for those who know. I fell in love with this one and one from the Greeks, but my roommate would only part with set II of this Red Rocks show.
I've looked for this show for over twenty years, to hear that Lovin, holy Phil, again, without 20 years of 5th generation static brought a tear to my eye.
Maybe not the best in terms of quality but there is an intangible energy in the second set that has not been duplicated.

Thanx Tony, I have been looking for this run for a long time and to get it complete is great!
My girlfriend and I ended up 4th row for this show. We took some photos during the 1st set, also pictures of our feet with the row 4 next to them. We had the photo album out as we listened to this night 21 years later. It was rainy this day, probably accounting for the somewhat more dampened sound than the previous two nights, though not a distraction. Great vocals, guitars and keys real clear. I like this night the best, though as in all 3 nights most every song is played very strong, very few tunes stand out as epic versions. I recommend at the very least giving this a careful listen as there are some fine moments indeed.
Set 1: 1st Big Boss man in 2 years to open. Enough said! I don't mind that the Jerry versions rarely excelled, I'll take it any night. I remember everyone having that cozy little moment of shared specialness. Jack Straw follows and is a good rocker. The Loser is particularly strong as is the following Cassidy that features urgent vocals and a great climactic jam. I Love Far From Me, Jerry singing the ooo background vocals is so much fun to hear. The set closer is a near perfect Box. I would get this one on setlist alone.
Set 2: Never ever disapointed to hear Uncle John's, especially to open the set! This has to be the shortest post 80's version. The He's Gone is my one of two favorite songs from this run (previuos night's Wharf Rat). This one is suberbly executed and the vocal jam at the end is a jewel. Check out Jerry singing the ooos at the end in falsetto. Phil is going to "Kick Some Ass" in Gimme Some Lovin'. A beautiful Stella proceeds. The encore is a Triple one sort of? NFA/Touch?Knockin'. Peace
