Subject: 1st night of Meadowlands run
The lesser of the three nights. The 1st set is the weakest of the run, varying from just below average to just above. There was static in a few places. They played above average the next two nights.
First Set. Typical for the period though Brent shines. Hey Pocky A-way ain't too shabby (but 3/31/89 is still better). West L.A. Fadeaway is technically good but spiritless. Dough Knees is shaky.
Second Set. Looks Like Rain is the point where things warm up. There are good versions through Drums>Space. The Wheel gets punchy, strong. As it often was in the late 80s, Morning Dew is a highlight. Ho hum, another Lovelight, right? Nope - worth hearing. Black Muddy not so much.
1st Set: C-
2nd Set: C+
Overall = 2 ½ Stars
Highlights:
Morning Dew - a unique version (natch)
Turn On Your Lovelight - Jer goes off; Bobby's falsetto not so much
SOURCES: The miller.91159 is the one you want.

Set one
Berta>Greatest>Hey Pocky WAY
Only an East Coast show could generate so much heat right out of the gate.
Why did the Dead get huge-Because they were 1000 times better than anyone else live at the time.
And I have said it before Brent becoming a front man was something you had to experience.
THANK YOU BRENT MYDLAND!!!
This a soundboard but you can hear how jazzed the crowd is.
WEST LA- highly underrated tune, great for dancin, very slinky. (also something they could stretch out on 10 minutes here)
STATIC- augh the enemy of crisp clean music.
Only reason I could not give this a 5 star.
I liked that the 50th anniversary shows featured a 2nd set- WEST L.A. after they had teased it earlier.
Queen Jane -took some abuse at the time but if you think about this is one of the tunes you will not get today because it was specific to the era in which the Dead performed it. (The backing vocals are great, Lots of Garcia)
RxR- how long has this tune been in the catalog?
Always something so upbeat about this prison tune. This and Mama Tried really fit the Dead's outlaw and freedom vibe.
Cassidy- Always dependable for exploratory jams. Nice hearing Brent putting in some backing vocals, drummers getting some pounding in.
"Fare thee well.
let your life proceed by its own design"
they regroup a little and that head out to explore the jam. You know this a tune they could have used every once in a while pre-drums and come out of drumz with "Flight of the SEABIRDS" oh just let me drift and dream.
They are loose--East Coast dance number, Only hippies can mosh pit with everyone all smiles.
Dough ;Knees Don't Ease...Jerry excited on those vocals
This is kinds like getting DEAL but way more to the point as a first set closer-SMOKING YEAH!
Set Two
Shakedown- I got the head phones on and pass them over to the old lady, she says, "Honey that is loud , you are going to loose your hearing" I deadpan back "WHAT????" I can hear it beat out loud...
Listen to how Brent gets right up in the vocals, the crowd loves it, Brent was like GASOLINE on Jerry's burn.
I wish they would go into SOULMAN but I already know it is L.L.R. Good jam out of Shakedown drummers really smacking around those drums.
Don't remember when the disco ball first made its appearance at Rainbow Gatherings but it got started from the SHAKEDOWN JAM.
just got to poke around...
Hey this is actually a very pretty Looks Like Rain,,, complete with thunder effects,,, Don't turn my whole world grey.
You can hear Dylan's influence on Bobby at points toward the end of this song. Weir's voice is good here. Crowd going nuts.
If you can't get a rainstorm in an indoor show make it rain inside the Byrne.
UJB>Playing>UJB- The opposite of how they usually ran this freight train with PITB sandwiched here between UJB
Check out Bob says "That's right" in the middle of the first part of Uncle John's.
This is a very nice show. I can't remember if I saw this live or just heard it on WBAI Dead AIR.
Anyhow the PlAYING is getting so spacey you almost feel Drumz coming on. Jerry is riffing like mad. Here those keys (and yes static again)
Back into UJB now that has got to be rare. I know when they did stuff like that I had real trouble keeping a set list especially if I was way out there at the time.
This a great show,, they are already messing with the beam,,, as the front line drift off stage.
DRUMZ>SPACE>WHEEL>GIMME SOME LOVIN>MORNING DEW>LOVELIGHT -entire post drumz all very solid.
Great to hear everyone joining in for some

This is a really solid show, but the Morning Dew, with Jerry's emotional cries, ranks as the Morning Dew to compare all others!

A good show. A good recording with some static at times. Not enough static to be a distraction.

...and was a very fun show to be at, as is recall. the recornding here does nothing to dispell, but rather strengthens that memory. the meadowlands were and will always be a pit, but once inside, there were some very good times.

Jersey crowds are amazing. Friends from N.J. told me that the highway around the stadium would jam and crazy heads would just park it and be barbecuing on the freeway.
