Once or twice a year, I inevitably find myself listening to something from the Worcester ‘88 run, and for good reason.
This one has a stacked setlist, which they torched with that fiery, trademark late 80’s energy. It has the loose spontaneity that puts the tunes in a position to go absolutely anywhere. When they sync up during some of those Garcia guitar solos… buckle up kids! First set highlights include the trippiest Stranger I’ve ever heard, which leads into a gorgeous Franklin’s Tower. There are different kinds of Franklin’ses; some are peppy, energetic, hyped up. Others, especially the 70’s versions, are funky, with heavy elements of reggae. With this one here, the main adjective that comes to mind is the word BEAUTIFUL. Jerry peels off sublime, joyous, melodic lines that prove the song could be more than just a straightforward party number. It’s like the sound your heart makes when you hear a girl you love laughing in the sun.
The second set highlight is a fire-breathing Estimated Prophet which they shred to ribbons. Also worth noting is a crafty Space > Wheel transition. The Wheel is a fairly common song out of Space, but there’s usually hints leading up to the segue, so you’re able to pick up on it. This Space is murky, and sounds much more like something that’s sure to lead into The Other One. Instead of barreling into a Phil bomb, it takes a sharp yet smooth 90-degree pivot into Jerry’s gentle opening licks to The Wheel. An example of the music itself turning ‘round, bound to cover just a little more ground.
Sporting arguably the best setlist of the 3-night stand, 4/7/88 cooks. Sending tunes like Touch of Grey, Big Railroad Blues, and Sugar Magnolia out of the park, they really went heavy on the rock songs and musical showmanship. It’s no wonder this era was a favorite of Bobby’s.
I’ll always have a soft spot for Spring ‘88. As a sophomore in high school, a friend of mine played middle man and lent me 3 official releases on CD from his generous brother’s collection to burn into my iTunes library: the Closing of Winterland, the acoustic 4/18/70 Family Dog show, and Road Trips Volume 4 Number 2 (featuring music from the April Fools’ ‘88 run at the Brendan Byrne Arena). I’ve loved the rubbery, spontaneous, energetically sizzling sound of Spring ‘88 ever since, and will always come back to it because of barn burners like this one.

This was the first of three shows in the spring of 1988 at The Centrum and would signify the last time the Dead played in Worcester. Over the years they played 14 times in Worcester. Twelve at The Centrum from 1983-1988 and two previous shows at Clark University and WPI in 1969-70. This is another Charlie Miller jem! Awesome sound and lots of energy from the band. The crowd sounds pumped despite the miserable weather that accompanied the spring of 1988. Jerry sounds frail and hoarse at times but is rumored to have had a cold. Brent is awesome as usually and the rest of the band is firing on all cylinders. Estimated Prophet really stood out for me!

This is a pretty good version for the period, ie the short, (this one is under 7 minutes)peppy version that is common in 87/88 until the return of Help/slip in 10/89.
When they bring back Help slip at Hampton 89 they go back to the original arrangement(more or less) ie the ending progression which they didnt even do when they brought back Help -slip in 83. I digress so when they bring it back with help -slip the Franlin's get longer and closer to the original arangement

Holy smokes, I've only listened to a few songs so far and -- what a show! Bob's on fire and the others ain't lame either. Check out Stranger (Bob near the end of it!), Memphis Blues and Watchtower. That's all I've heard so far but these alone warrant the five stars. Great sound quality, too.
