Mellow Sound....
....and Jerry seems out of it at points (start of Sugaree, China > Rider). Still some good parts (MNS, Terrapin). And I like the Bird Song - but odd that It ends the first set - don’t recall that happening before...Overall below average show (2.5), but easy to round up for superior sound quality.

Was a popular B & P trade
Middle of a 3-day Greek run, before the Laguna Seca run and after the well-regarded Oxford show. An average show at the Greek on UC campus was still an event (and a parking nightmare - like most college towns!), but Oxford and the other scattered shows in summer 88 (Eugene, East coast) were all better than this run, as it turns out. Other years had great Greek runs though. The FM broadcast made it a common trade. There was a Russian singer-songwriter guy in between sets.
First Set. The mix is off at first but even after it settles it remains an average, if low-energy set (there's an Itsy Bitsy Spider tuning before Rooster). Not bad but they don't really get on top of it until Stuck Inside Mobile. Jer is then ready to go, on a good Far From Me (bury it down between the lines). For Bird Song they cut short and run.
Second Set. China>Rider is average until the final, brilliant solo. Jer is also brilliant on Looks Like Rain. Terrapin is rough and a bunch of speakers blew. Mickey was using pads and electronic percussion in 88 that can make Drums sound great or dated. This one's long @16min (of the almost-half-hour D/S) but some of the Tunable Drums stuff is Babatunde Olatunji. Say what you will about I Will Take You Home, this is the 4th one and probably the best of the year. Brent would get about 30 times-in to a couple of his songs and to punch them up he'd get maudlin or histrionic (in lieu of harder rock versions or transitioning to passionate arrangements à la Bobby or Jer). There are conflicting anecdotes as to how much or whether Bobby liked Healy putting mods on and swimming his vox around the arena for The Other One, but it was fresh at the time - and even now unexpected. This one stands out for that reason (Phil does believe this was one of the reasons Healy went off the board in 94). The rest, including the rockers pairing, is yr average 88.
1st Set: C-
2nd Set: C
Overall = 2½ stars
Highlights:
Stuck Inside of Mobile - Happens to be a singularly notable version. Not to say best ever but great.
I Will Take You Home - If anyone's looking, this is the one
SOURCES: The Miller is best but there's a great Braverman matrix that adds energy to the 1st Set. Stuck Inside of Mobile is on Postcards.
