Diedrich K. & the Dutch Dynasty
The middle show of one of the top few runs of the '90s; the run chosen to be culled for the first run-based OFF release. Admittedly it's the lesser night of the three, but not drastically. In particular it has the only Greatest Story into Touch opener, a classic Truckin'>Spoonful, and Brent's best take of Take You Home. It's also the day Eyes was switched to a slower tempo.
First Set. Greatest Story is a brilliant salvo; a statement of purpose. The next few are average [but note that Good Time Blues on Dozin' has less Jer volume, with more aud/live feel, which is probably a more accurate mix]. Jack A Roe is chocolate cake for breakfast [Dozin' has better Bobby guitar]. Masterpiece is good enough but sans fireworks. Bird Song is solid, dreamy even, but doesn't go anywhere special, just GOGD. However, this fantastic Let it Grow is showy arena landscaping.
Second Set. The SBD is missing the first 15secs of Eyes of the World. The slower tempo neither improves nor damages, and Brent is especially good. It gets better as it goes. Brent again is the motor under Samson, much as he is this whole run; truly at his peak. Next it's a piquant Truckin', into a superb Spoonful. The latter has a sort-of-MLB tease, in the '74 key of E. The night before it was in D [previous to '74 it was briefly in D, then A]. Drums>Space aren't as impressive as elsewhere on this landmark tour, but this is considered the best example of Take You Home. Even if it's not in the best position, Brent was never better [Dozin' has slightly better instrument balance & separation]. If that doesn't leave you ready, take your protein pills and put your helmet on for this Goin' Down the Road. And the sweet Black Peter also surprises. But WTF is Bobby doing in Around & Around? Ouch. [Brent's solo is louder on Spring90 TOO]. Mighty Quinn is satisfying enough to bolster a buzz out on shakedown, minutes later.
1st Set: B-
2nd Set: B
Overall = 3¾ stars
Highlights:
Greatest Story Ever Told – brilliant salvo
Jack A Roe – chocolate cake
Let it Grow – arena landscaping
Truckin'>Spoonful – classic version, esp. the Spoonful
I Will Take You Home – best version
Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad>Black Peter – both surprise
SOURCES: The 135267_sbd-pc_miller is the updated version of the too-slow miller_87347. It has been patched, but some tunings are cut and it runs a bit fast, needing -1% pitch correction. The SBDs clip the beginnings of Wang Dang, Masterpiece & Eyes. Dozin' has Jack-A-Roe, Good Time Blues, Masterpiece & Space through Around. Spring 1990 TOO has the whole show.
