Emasculate the fire breathing dragon!
My first show was February 11, 1969 and my last show was September 10, 1991 - this is the first time I'm listening to this show. What happened to Garcia's tone? It sounds like he is playing a nylon guitar. Then he doubled down the idea with effects laden as if he is a 11 year old boy searching for the sound. Garcia on the Les Paul was a Fire Breathing Dragon. On the Strat he was picture perfect perfection pulling tones directly from his soul. I'm of the generation that felt his tone declined (noticeably) when he got the Wolf (even though his playing didn't suffer). Could you imagine anyone approaching him with this 'sound' to use when he used to play within an inch of his life? I'm honestly saddened listening to this.

Has It's Moments
September 93 is Garcia's last solid month of translucent playing with the Dead (he produced some fine JGB shows in November)...what I find is that some meaty nuggets can be culled from virtually any show from 9/93...on this occasion, the band pulled off some good material...the Shakedown Street is one of the better versions of the Welnick era (not quite as good as 12-16-1992 or 05-27-1993)...Cold Rain is superb...second set is decent enough, when the band is cooking and Jerry's has a nice tone dialed in things sound great, otherwise I find the mix in this period of tapes to sound sterile and the that damn acoustic tone from Jerry not always jelling...

Dont tell me this town aint got no heart!
This is JoeShoe replying to the reviewer below. While four stars is probably a little high for this show as a whole, these are honestly among the very best versions of Shakedown and Cold Rain, take a listen and tell me I'm wrong.
Finding two all time versions of classic tunes in a 93 show is what prompted me to give the four stars. In fact, I think the Rain>>Cold Rain run is worthy of 5+! These four tunes are played to their fullest potential and beyond!
But yeah, this show as a whole is probably only three stars tops. But hey folks, do yourself a favor and give the opening quadlibet a listen and I promise you wont be disapointed :)

Previous Review Non-sensical
The previous reviewer said: "Then one of the all time biggest dropoffs-the rest of the show. Rain through Cold Rain is absolutely blistering, the rest of the show is absolutely boring."
Than how is this a 4 out of 5 stars?? Explain that to me. This show is a 2 at best. I went to all Garden shows since '79 and this was quite forgetable, unfortunately. I actually don't even remember it.

SHAKEDOWN!?!
One of the all time best Shakedowns! No kidding, I rank this one up there with 6-30-85 and 6-22-91 as my favorite versions of Shakedown. Jerry is hitting all the notes with the perfect amount of funk in his tone. Vince is in rare form, showing that when he's on, he can tickle the ivories with the best of them. Delectable funk jams found here. Free your mind and your ass will follow!
The Cold Rain is also among the best versions out there. I rank this with the TLEO from 9-10-93 as the best examples of the 'acoustic' tone Jerry was using around this time. The acoustic feel harkens back to this tunes folk roots. Jerry nails every note with gusto and really gets into the vocal, practically shouting the "Out in the cold rain and snow. Run Me! Out in the Cold Rain and Snow. RUN ME!!!" He is so into it and singing so passionately that it makes you forget the late date and transports you back to the mid-60s. Then they drop the Ball with a mediocre Queen Jane and the show never recovers.
This show features one of the all time opening combos-Rain>Shakedown>Wang Dang>Cold Rain. Then one of the all time biggest dropoffs-the rest of the show. Rain through Cold Rain is absolutely blistering, the rest of the show is absolutely boring. This is a textbook example of the "hit or miss" show that was so common 93-94. Dont know what caused the show to fall off a cliff like that but... "goes to show you dont ever know"
5+ for Rain>>Cold Rain.
5 for CM SBD.
2 for rest of show.
