The End
1981 features Jerry's finest guitar playing and singing. Greatest Passenger here, never to be heard again.
Greatest new years run, coupled with the greeks, indianapolis,
st.paul, new haven, Ithaca and the garden etc. make this a spectacular year. The scene and the playing was never the same after this week.

love these winter 81 shows.
The Dec. run starting with the Dec 2 Urbana, IL
(Chicago res.) The Madison and Indianna and this beautiful 5 day stay leading up To the peak New Years show. To Lay Me Down and Deep Elem is top notch, it doesn't get much better than this stuff. Check out Jerry's guitar work on Deep Elem. The Dec run and Madison Square Garden are my Favorites for the year. Just about everything in between is good and of coarse the Europe tours were pretty dam good. Oh can't forget one ofd my favorites Big Boss Man. Nice break out the night before(last 5/25/72). Love those solos on that song, Jerry skies on some of them. Esp the later ones the 12/31/89 is a good one as well as 12/31/81-12/31/83, 6/21/84, 4/8/85 and 6/16/90 are my favorites. Big Daddy Jerry Boss Man.
Anyway These shows are all 5's in my mind.
Killer sound on this one.

Last Passenger
A great run at the old Oakland Aud. For some reason, Passenger was retired after this show. The To Lay Me Down is exquisite as is the whole of the second set. Very strong 1st set as well

Nice
Great Sampson - solid first set and delightful TLMD. 12/31 is the pick of the litter and the third set is just off the charts.

The Best Samson Ever!
I haven't listened to the rest of the show yet,so the stars are only for this tune, but the Samson And Delilah from this show is one of the gems I got from the Deadhead Hour years ago. It is my favorite version of the tune I've ever found. Ever single band member is just rippin' it up! Check it out!

Excellent show, and quite spirtual at times, although you might not be able to fit this on just 2 discs as the txt notes suggest

I went to all of these and I thought the first two very good, even given that the New Year's show was the best of the later period New Year's shows ever !
How many times have you heard Weir improvise words during the jam to Playin' in the Band ?

remember the christmas lights?
The end of the year shows were always great. Remember the Christmas lights that were strung the length of the auditorium? Remember volleyball? Back then, they even used to let you camp in the park. Might have been oh, five tents set up and a blanket with some hippy goods, very mellow. This recording sounds pretty good so far. One of the few electric Deep Elems too :)
