Subject: Home Field Advantage
As UC Berkeley students in the early 80s, we always viewed the annual weekend of GD Greek Theater shows as "home games" held, quite literally, in our backyard. From the beautiful amphitheater setting and bay views, to the original batique stage dress, terrific sound and adoring crowds it’s no wonder the band often turned in inspired performances at this venue. This show is a fine example. The band comes out hot on Stranger and stays that way throughout. Jerry is razor sharp and the band is tight, making this a no -doubter for one of 1983's best. Highlights include a terrific Shakedown with unique vocal rounds and sweet soloing. The Playing jam gets serious fast and peaks multiple times before giving way to a haunting China Doll and flowing back into the jam. The post drums/space Wheel is simply beautiful, tho it really starts at 5:44 of the space on this tracking (trust me), and winds into a confident Playing reprise before culminating in an emotional Morning Dew and raucous Sugar Mag to close the frame. All I know is everyone, including me, left smiling having witnessed a special Saturday night where the home team definitely won. O'h and, IMHO, this is by far the best sounding capture of the many variants of this show, so many kudos to Jeff Silberman and Fishman for their excellent preservation work.
