Jerry's voice really hadn't recovered yet, and he croaked his way through every song. I loved the first set -- lots of unusual songs and three first-timers for me to start. An instrumental Supplication at least partially sated my craving for a 1st set jam. As to the 2nd set, the only really strong part was the jam out of Estimated and then the Eyes. This is probably the fastest Eyes they ever played, and Jerry holds his own on guitar at that blistering tempo like he's Steve Vai or someone. People think of Jerry as an improviser, but he was a very accomplished technical guitarist as well. Of course, Stella suffered badly from Jerry's harshed-out voice.

I don't know about u but the dead concert experience for me was the verity in the song selection nite to nite. This 1st set boasts some courageous rare songs played wonderfully. I know the show is rather short but whats there I really get off on.

The only meaning anything has is that which you assign it.
If others say the show was "on", try to "listen" why...
This is one helluva band doing what they do best...jamming in arenas that substitute for garages. The ENERGY of this event (crowd feeding band/ band feeding crowd) is what makes this such a memorable show.
The technical aspects of the music/Jerry's voice, etc. will always questioned by the critical who do not listen for the moment.

Subject: Just a thought
Subject: Just a thought
It seems to me on this website that a lot of people either love a show...or hate a show. So, I submit these thoughts for consideration. I was at the Philly shows every year for 2 decades, and it seemed to me that even if the boys werent playing all that well...there was always a special feeling in the air at the Spectrum. I loved going to see shows there. The best part about The Grateful Dead to me was obviously the music, but a close 2nd was being with friends and family just lovin life!.......I may be wrong but, even if the music was "bad" it was still pretty damn good....As far as Jerry gasping for air....he lost his voice most of that tour. But I'm a glass half full kinda guy...and I enjoyed when he lost his voice....because he looked like he'd get fed-up trying to sing and just start pickin'...
Maybe people give out 5 stars for shows just because they miss what we had so good for so long....I'd say, its safe to bet that all of us would enjoy hearing Jerry's tired voice right now.....I sure would...
However, I am thankful that the rest of the boys are still are still around playing and doing what the love most...
I hate to say it, but some deadheads are spoiled...its been 50 years not every show can be a jewel..this one is definitely a diamond in the rough ;)
faith..hope...and love to all

Reviews are contagious and sadly unreliable. This show starts off with some nice moments but just degenerates into sloppiness and sludge.
It's just sad after hearing a show like this, to see all these rave reviews about how the band was "ON" and how Revolution was a "masterpiece". Wow, it honestly was a mess.
While the show certainly has moments (mostly in set 1), it's just dragging itself the rest of the way, sloppy, and with Garcia gasping for air.
Anyone uninitiated, reading these delusional reviews, then listening for him/herself will just have more fodder to claim that the GD are a joke and that the fans are clueless. Neither is true, though these reviews would lead you to think otherwise.
The band has put out a slew of wonderful shows and there are so many better ones than this (and better ones from this tour, too). This show may be worth hearing for some, but why do we keep claiming rave reviews for moments of total wreck? Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome perhaps?

I was at this show and it was the best of the run if not the whole spring tour.I have a soundboard of this show and I find little difference in sound quality, however after thirty-five years of show it's a wonder I can hear at all. Thanks to the taper and whoever posted it and anyone else who had a hand in getting this gem in my hands crowd cheers and all.
