I can't believe no one has mentioned the MONSTER music never stopped. It's always important to mention audio quality and individual songs in reviews of what are essentially just audio downloads to people who didn't attend this, or possibly any, GD show(s). Straight out--this is a sick soundboard. I already had the next night show downloaded, and this is probably a bit crispier. That said, the next night is the highlight of this 2-day run.
Remember the boys had come back from Europe 1990 (having previously SHREDDED their way in Fall Tour 90 from Ohio-Spectrum-MSG). After Europe, they played TWO days at Oakland Coliseum (kinda weird for 90's era), then these shows in AZ, next came the sick 1st post-Red Rocks run at McNichols Arena in Denver. In essence, the Grateful Dead, and Jerry in Particular were absolutely in their groove for these first few months post-Brent. Believe me when I tell you, because I saw all of those shows except Europe and December in Oak-town.
If you wanna here crazy sick shit, then check out first night at McNichols--3 years since GD had been in Colorado and the response to "clear Colorado rain" in the 2nd set is insane.
As for the recording of this show, Jerry is in the middle of the mix, not too out front, but I think that's the way he liked it--he really liked playing WITH other people. Also, unlike how Healy added unwanted effects and fades to Bob's vocals, I don't think Healy would ever consciously give Jerry anything except what he wanted.
I think here it is important to talk about the venue, Compton Terrace Amphitheater. The word "terrace" is descriptive of the set-up: it was a lawn that was terraced,
i.e. a series of angular step-ups that crossed the whole lawn in one long incline, with long flats areas about 10-15 feet wide going the width of the lawn in-between the inclines. So it was a very down-home venue, like seeing them in an open field. Also being December and outdoors with shirts off in the sun made it crazy fun--I think Jerry wore shorts.
Jerry thus gets real loose on Music and shreds so hard that when Phil starts the Coda, Jerry keeps soloing for a few seconds.
A 5 star recording and a 4 star show, but I have to give 4 stars because of the 5 star next night in AZ and the 5 star first night in Denver. Sick shit, this show and the next night and the first night in Denver are all must haves.
