The Dead's first show in Vegas!
Went out for the weekend, both shows were during the day, pretty, not to hot with a nice wind. Carlos opened for them on both days. On 4/27 the Dead opened their second set with Sugar Mag, but no Sunshine Daydream: that followed at the end of the second set the next day. Nice symmetry except - unbelievably - Carlos wasn't hip to the part about the Dead not repeating songs during a single run so the crowd would stick around for days, etc, AND PLAYED THE SAME OPENING SET ON BOTH DAYS.
Couple of notes, at every show I went to the band always played something good from another group over the PA during intermission - when I started in '73 it was the Beetles. But for their first show in Las Vegas, it was Frank Sinatra! Finally, late in the afternoon on 4/28 as the plane taxied from the gate on its way to LA, someone started clapping to Not Fade Away, and in seconds 2/3rd's of the plane joined in. I was sitting behind two stewardesses as one said to the other, "Oh, this is going to be a fun flight!"

Best of '91
Sugar Mag, Scarlet>Fire, Playin'>Uncle>and the Drums! Check out the whole show, but it don't get any better than this prespace portion of the 2nd set...all well done.
And Black Peter is exquisite!
This show is right up there with my other '91 favorites: 4/1, 9/10, and 10/31.

The Dead in Vegas? Woo-hooo!
I agree with the previous reviewer--the way the show starts out, with an audience recording, so you can re-live those 1st few moments of what it was like to be at the show, & then seemlessly merges with the soundboard recording--is amazing! I think it should be the standard by which all new recordings begin!
So many things to say, I hardly no where to start . . . Have to say that personally, I was never a big fan of Garcia's guitar-midi work--I prefer it when Garcia sounds like Garcia! Except however, during space, and I have to say that this drums/space is exceptionally dark & moody.
And though I love Bruce, I never cared for his accordian sound--much prefer him pounding the piano.
Vince, well, he was actually OK here . . .
It goes w/out saying that the Black Peter is the standout of this very good show, though with a weird & abrupt ending, like they didn't know where to go w/ the song from there, so suddenly they just stopped playing, which I thought was somewhat of a letdown from an otherwise seriously smokin' version.
For anyone whose interested, if you're used to playing these shows through typical room speakers, do yourself a favor & invest in a pair of high quality earbuds--they take the music to another level altogether. It's as if the music is originating inside your head!! Makes sitting at my desk doing data-entry BS actually enjoyable!
As far as sound quality? Come on, this is a Charlie Miller recording! Every show I've listened to that he has posted here on archive has been excellent sound. Thanks Charlie--keep on keepin' on!!

sound gets good quick
First 15 sec or so of opener TOG sounds like typical disappointing outdoor recording, but then it seamlessly and almost imperceptively becomes like direct SBD and remains great for the rest of the show.
That said, the show itself is pretty standard '91. Nothing to set it apart.

This is the one
If you are looking at dl'ing this night, this version is far superior in sound and continuity to the other SBD version here on the archive. This version is worlds more crispy and dynamic.
