at least, here, he is turned down in the mix, both vocally, and musically. Unfortunately, I believe Jerry might be turned down a little as well. The good thing about this show is that Phil's bass is turned way up in the mix. Here he demonstrates how much of a leader he really is regarding gd music. Yeah, Brent's not there, and the cal expo '90 with Brent are out of this world, but it's the boys, and Phil is making sure this one doesn't suck. Again I love the sound here. These early vince shows sans Hornsby truly show how much he sucked. If you want even worse, check out the fall '90 stuff before Hornsby hopped on the Bus. Jerry and the rest of the boys had to step it up and you can take that away from those shows as well. Still, the direction went to a more ragtime boogie woogie direction, the jams were far reaching but definately didn't go into the dark regions of the void nearly as much as when Brent was on stage. But there is a circus feel to the way vince played, and I believe the music moved more toward a festival/carnival vacation islandy sound. Maybe not here but over time, that is how the boys were getting their weirdness out.

was not that good. For sure. His solo here stinks. He had little talent compared to the others. I wish they never hired him and gave Bruce Hornsby 2x the salary that the other members got. Bruce is a fantastic pianist!

i hate to keep harping on it, but...
Vince's solo in The Race Is On epitomizes why I can't listen to post-Brent Dead, as much good energy as there was in these years...
he was just nowhere near the level of musician the other guys were ... plodding & noisy, constantly stepping on the toes of the others...
sorry for the negativity, but for me it's akin to watching a bunch of classically trained Shakespearian actors do Hamlet with Andrew Dice Clay playing Laertes...
