Woodcuts with Latin names and German synonyms
Title and date from first leaf (Herbarius Patauie impressus Passau anno Dom[in]i [et]cetera .lxxxv.); place and printer from Incunabula short title catalogue
Leaves 5 through 154 numbered i-Cl, each containing a single woodcut illustration, with corresponding explanatory text running onto the verso of the leaf
Signatures: [1⁴ 2-21⁸ 22¹⁰] ([21]₈=blank)
Chancery quarto; [2]₁ (i.e. fol. i) verso: 34 lines, 156 x 87 mm; types: 150 (title, headings, and foliation), 92 (text)
COPY NOTE: Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy Q.405.115 imperfect: [21]₈ (blank) excised. All woodcuts hand-colored. Some deckles intact. Leaf dimensions: 206 x 152 mm.
PROVENANCE: Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy Q.405.115 with unidentified dealer's description laid on to front free endpaper. Early inscription in upper margin of first leaf: "herba benedicta est Valeriana Orat [...]"; in the lower margin: "Ad infirmariã Rebdorff:" Early/contemporary medical inscription in several parts on verso of first leaf, with the first part heading "Aqua pro occulis. Aug[e]n Wasser." Marginal annotations throughout in ink, pencil, and scribed in blind. Final 5 lines of fol. Cviij struck out in red ink. This copy appears in Quaritch catalog no. 173 (October, 1897), item 107. Purchased from Quaritch in November, 1939.
BINDING: Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy Q.405.115 bound in early/contemporary blind tooled sheepskin. Single catch plate removed, clasp anchor remaining. Spine painted white, with early manuscript title and shelf mark (27[?])
