LibriVox recording of JUST WILLIAM, by RICHMAL CROMPTON. Read by David Wales
William is a mischievous eleven year old who is puzzled by the adult world, which is no less puzzled by him. The humor is gentle and pleasing. The series of books is better known in the United Kingdom than in the U.S. (Summary by David Wales)

For those who are not familiar with the William series, it's worth bearing in mind that this one (the first) was published in 1922, so was written at a time when class barriers and boundaries were still firmly in place. An 11 yo boy from a very middle-class, Home Counties background - such as William certainly was - would be to a significant degree 'younger' than an 11 yo boy such as my uncle, who, born in 1911, was permitted, due to his good progress and behaviour at school, to 'go part-time' when he reached the age of 12, and apprentice to his father (my grandfather), a farrier.
The narrator's tone and expression are both good, but sadly his accent for reading such an exceedingly *English* story is simply jarring, to my ears at least.

As a 10-year old in the 50s, I found William eye-wateringly funny and absurd, an antidote to those restrictive times. All the characters are, of course, stereotypes but well drawn and right for the period. These days, we'd probably say William was 'somewhere on the ADHD spectrum' and give him Ritalin... and not have these books to chuckle at.
The reader's accent is fine for the setting, if a little lugubrious.

William is a most imaginative, fun, thoughtless boy, getting into more kinds of trouble than his poor family could ever prepare for or prevent.
Not having brothers or sons, I admit I find it hard to picture this as an 11-year-old. Perhaps a century ago, 11 year old boys put feathers in their hair and pretended they were Indians? I kept picturing William as about 8 years old.
Read beautifully by David Wales.
