LibriVox recording of Lilith, by George MacDonald. Read by Pete Williams, Pittsburgh, PA.
Lilith, written by the father of fantasy literature, George MacDonald, was first published in 1895. Its importance was recognized in its later revival in paperback by Ballantine Books as the fifth volume of the celebrated Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in September, 1969. Lilith is considered among the darkest of MacDonald's works, and among the most profound. It is a story concerning the nature of life, death and salvation. Many believe MacDonald is arguing for Christian universalism, or the idea that all will eventually be saved. (Summary from Wikipedia)

Fantasy with the basic framework taken from once banned religions now tapped to run the new age like druidism, caballah and Jewish mythology somewhat allegorical along with his own inventions and apparitions, interesting because it was the start of a new movement of magic so popular at the start of the 20th century as a result of the imagination being stirred up to hip readers and exploited thouroughly by some publishers as it is today. looking into it as more than a novel horror story is not in my reason and he probably would fail as a serious author as one who would write beneficial works of reality but who knows what the agenda is of this type of nonescense

"Lilith" is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read; it is a story of love and hate, isolation and restoration, joy and sorrow, corruption and redemption, and the prices that each bear. It causes us to come face to face with the broken things in our own hearts, while simultaneously and unceasingly affirming us in our beauty and our value. It is a story that challenges and restores our hope.
Mr. Williams' reading is superb. His voice is clear and consistent through each segment. There is no disruptive background noise or static, nor does Mr. Williams stumble over his words or include awkward reading-sounds (lip smacking, coughing, loud sniffing, etc). His voice is gentle and captivating; rather than offering a static, flat reading, he reads with emotion to draw the listener in with the flow of the book. Mr. Williams was well-prepared for each segment, and brings us consistent, high-quality recordings. Very many thanks for his hard work.

The experience of listening to Lilith, by George MacDonald, as read by Pete Williams is like listening to a dream. I had listened to it some time ago, but was in the mood to hear it again this past week. Absolutely superb recording! If you enjoy reading C. S. Lewis, this fantasy is a must read. You may discover the source of many Lewis allusions. You may understand why George Macdonald so greatly influenced the writings of C S Lewis.

I don't usually write reviews but I made an exception because I wanted to thank Pete Williams, the reader of this book. His voice is clear and easy to listen to. He leaves no doubt as to which character is speaking in the story, which is more challenging than it appears. I was thrilled to have a free, high quality recording of one of my favorite books.
George MacDonald is a master at creating haunting images of the spiritual world. Lilith was regarded by him as his greatest work and I heartily agree. He takes many of the ideas scattered throughout his other fantasy stories and brings them together on a much larger tapestry. It was stories like this one that inspired C. S. Lewis.

George MacDonald's haunting allegorical fantasy novel is filled with beautiful and at times disturbing dreamlike imagery. The reader does an excellent job bringing a challenging work to life.
