Subject: Interesting setlist...
Subject: Interesting setlist...
Thanks Brian for the upload. I've been looking for this set for almost 9 months now! Now if I could only get a recording of 9/9/02 opening for Robert Plant at Berkeley Community Theater I'd have recordings from all my 25 shows :)
As for this show, I really dug the first set. I doubt Runaway Overlude will ever become a serious part of the repertoire, but the opening NCD > Wormwood > 32 Things is solid, and though the Bullet > Brent Black is on the lengthy side (> 40 minutes combined), it's serious energy sandwiching a silky smooth segue in between (nice alliteration eh?).
I really like Skrunk, but this wasn't their best ever, however this Skrunk > Lazarus > George is a nice triplet, all in the same key (B minor for you nerds out there). I say interesting setlist because they played a bunch of new songs, none of which is on an album (if you count the re-worked Lazarus too). I guess George isn't that new, but still.
I like CYHMK, but the Stones version is better than this long, drawn out, moe. version. I saw a good moe. version at Vegoose once, but this version was lacking, especially with Willie Waldman. I guess he's a nice dude and all, but every time he's come out with moe. I've been severely unimpressed. He was super high on coke one night at the Fillmore jumping around like a cheerleader about 5 years ago (last time I saw him with moe.); strange dude. Perk was a nice addition on drums though... Good Buster, not great, good Crab Eyes, not great. The energy sort of dissipated from CYHMK onward, and I can't help but attribute it to the length of the track and how erratic things were at times with that damn trumpet.
The crowd was full of a bunch of strung out street punks from Sonoma; nasty wooks dosed out of their minds in full festi-mode. Maybe I would've felt differently had I camped and gone to more than just the late-night shows...
For the solid recording and the highlights being really high (NCD > WW > 32, Bullet > BB, Skrunk > Lazarus > George), 4 stars. Worth the download.
