- v.1 (1729-1732)
1 volume (incomplete): 43 cm (folio in 4s)
Title supplied based on the form of title used for the first volume of the 1731-1743 edition, which was published between 1729 and 1732
Apparently a variant printing of the two volume edition issued in 11 parts between 1731-1743 [that is, 1729-1747]. This printing has the format of a folio in 4s, rather than the format of a folio in 2s for the standard 1731-1743 edition. This copy has the text printed on the recto side of the leaves, and the images (where present) are printed on the verso side of the leaves, instead of on separate leaves of plates. This incomplete copy is the only copy of this printing known to exist. It is unknown whether a second volume of this printing was also published. For more information about the printing history of this publication, see the chapter by Leslie K. Overstreet, "The publication of Mark Catesby's 'The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama islands,' in The curious Mr. Catesby (Athens and London: The University of Georgia Press, 2015), pages 155-172
Hand-colored illustrations (etchings), printed on the verso of the text leaves
Cullman Library copy has volume 1, only, and the copy is imperfect. The title leaf and some of the preliminaries intended for the first volume of the edition issued between 1729 and 1732 (the list of encouragers, the map, and the account) are wanting, as well as pages 81-100 and plates numbered 82-100. Pages iii-xii are damaged, affecting the text on most of those leaves
