I snuck a portable sony cassette player/recorder under my jacket into the Capital Theater. This was the days before taping was allowed. It was a cheap little player, it had a condenser mike built into the unit, no external microphone. The NRPS with Jerry, Marmaduke, Dave Nelson, Spencer and Torbert opened, and they were on fire. The Dead came out and did two sets, so the whole night was over 5 hours. It was one of the best Dead shows I ever attended. Unfortunately, the recording technology wasn't all that great, but it did capture a somewhat muddy/noisey concert. Jerry had an amazing night that night.

Yeah it could be better but I love the energy; for all the times the NRPS played with the Dead there just aren't that many tapes available of the NRPS...

Reliably proficient country rockers, the New Riders perform well here, but they've done better. Sound quality is only fair. It sounds pretty muddy, and tape flutter from the original recording is present frequently enough to be annoying at times.
An aside for compulsive NRPS fans -- there is another Port Chester show circulating, 2 CDs worth, which is also dated 2-18-71. According to jerrybase.com, that date is in error and should be 2-28-71.
