SCNHRB c. 2 is imperfect: plate 20 has been torn in half, with the loose portion laid in
SCNHRB c. 1 and c. 2 both have additional plates inserted, including some that are printed in reddish brown and some that are mounted photographs of fossil impressions. These extra plates appear to be versions of some of the plates published in Deane's posthumous work, Ichnographs from the sandstone of Connecticut River (Boston : Little, Brown, 1861)
SCNHRB c. 1 and c. 2 both have stamp: Vertebrate Paleontology, U.S. National Museum, Smithsonian Institution National Museum
SCNHRB c. 1 and c. 2 both have old black half-leather bindings with mottled paper boards, raised bands, and gilt-lettered spines
