This journal and register includes material on mammals of the Hudson Highlands and an index to all of the notes on birds; a list of specimens by label number and a chronological list of birds seen each day, 1874 to 1886. Mearns writes at the beginning of the journal that he will start with a list of labels of birds already collected, then will commence with listing birds seen every day since March 5 1874. The initial label list includes the following: locations, sex and age, scientific name, and two sets of numbers (one in order of listing starting from one, the other possibly collector number). Journal style observations are included sporadically throughout the journal. Also included are lists of skins collected, collector or personal numbers for which range from 562-1823 and include the following information: name, sex, measurements, location, and occasionally notes about first sightings. Page 500 has a list of mammals taken from the Hudson Highlands. "Mammals of the Hudson Highlands", a field guide for mammals, starts on page 531, followed by field notes on mammals collected in the Hudson Highlands numbered 69-220 and "mammals from territory of Arizona" numbered 1-448. Localities include but are not limited to Orange County, Highland Falls, Hudson River, and Newburgh in New York, and Florida
