Subject: A little piece of history
Subject: A little piece of history
My wife and I were at this show, towards the back and off to the side. I don’t remember it being anything profound, but it was very good. Now here’s my own personal little slice of history, and why this will always be one of my favorite concerts ever. Not only was it a warm SoCal day, but my wife was roughly 6 months pregnant at the time. This was to be our third and final kid - the first 2 were boys (heaven help that younger me), but we had known for a couple of months that this was finally our little girl. Everything was looking perfect, except for one small but increasingly annoying disagreement: the name, the name, the name. We went back and forth, beginning with the ride home from the gender-confirming ultrasound, every goddamn day for at least two months straight. Hundreds of names if not more, back and forth, and literally nothing even remotely in common. It was starting to sour the experience just a tiny bit. Being a fanatical Deadhead since 15 years old, and knowing it was our last child, I was throwing out every Dead-related name I could come up with. Nothing seemed to click. I’m sure our impending choice (keep reading) had been mentioned at some point, but apparently neither of us had seemed to notice or consider it much.
So anyways, we’re at this Ratdog show, and we’re enjoying the music and trying not to worry about a name for the new baby. And then a slowish but familiar pattern begins on the drums, and then Bob starts singing, “Delilah was a woman...” And I turned to my wife right as she turned to me, and we both smiled and kissed, and the decision had been made without another word. It’s still completely fucking incredible to me, even after almost 3 solid decades of trading and downloading shows, that I can pull up this track and relive this exact moment in my life
My daughter Delilah turns 12 later this year; she’s awesome pretty much all the way around, with a personality very appropriate to her name. She’s been an insatiably crazy Beatlemaniac from about 6 months old, and I’m more and more optimistic about adding another Deadhead to our ranks very soon. (That’s what made me write this review today - she’s been playing American Beauty nonstop for a week or two now. Thank you Jerry!) Anyways it’s our personal history but it’s an awesome memory, and I will never stop being continually grateful to live in a universe with this band. 😎
