Subject: Double bill w/ Soulive
Subject: Double bill w/ Soulive
I made the drive up from CT to see this show, SKB and Soulive being two of my favorite bands form the early 00's. Needless to say, Kimock's performance turned out to be the stuff of legends - I had a "PEAK" experience during this set, and the only bummer was that it didn't go on all night.
The weird thing (and a bummer) was that, as clean as SKB sounded in that boomy old theater (as evidenced by this incredible recording), Soulive's set was practically unlistenable: so muddy and distorted, in such contast to what you hear here. I wished Kimock's sound man stuck around for Soulive's set!

Subject: The Holy Grail
Well you've done it! You've found the Holy Grail in Steve Kimock's catalog. The triune of his inspired playing and tone, spanning song choices and unrivaled recording quality makes this show akin to the Dead's performance on 5/8/77 or that of Phish on 12/31/95. It is THAT incredible.
Right out the gate of the improvisation section in It's Up to You, Kimock is in the zone, effortlessly finding and playing beautiful melodic phrases. This kaleidoscopic hair-raising playing is what I'm sure everyone reading this message chases in their live music pursuits.
This is a patient Kimock, leaving no stone unturned. Case and point; You're the One, the slide guitar section after Arne's bass solo. Kimock leads us into a hauntingly psychedelic journey with an almost cautionary ease. A solo that is truly unique in this song's history.
Every song here is masterfully played, every single one. Of another particular note, Elmer's Revenge. Check out Steve's face-melting 16th note train of thaumaturgic goodness starting at 9 minutes in.
Let's not forget that the whole band needs to be locked in together, they easily rally behind Kimock's blistering performance, particularly Rodney, who follows and inspires Kimock's lead. Even Mitch isn't that offensive with his solos!
So how do you close out a stellar set such as this? Why of course with a blissful Tongue and Groove complete with a phenomenal peak.
We are lucky to have this so perfectly captured by Scott Brown.
Did you really read this whole thing? LISTEN TO THIS SHOW!!!!

Just started getting back into Kimock after a few years away. This show is stellar! A gorgeous recording with terrific balance and stereo imaging. Props to Scott Brown for capturing the show in such high fidelity.
The band is in fine form and the ensemble playing is tight right from the start. Mitch Stein shines here - super tasteful rhythm work in It's Up To You.

Intense energy just in the first tune alone!!! Kimock not only is the best guitarist on the planet but he knows how to develop ebb and flow in a composition...taking us along for the ride on his kick-ass melodies. This deserves way more than five stars... so I give it *******************

This one somehow eluded my ears until now; great sound and playin' with Mitch, Arne and Rodney! I say: Bring back Moose for some edgy counterpart to Kimock!

Wow! I have close to 100 SKB shows, but this is not one of them. After streaming this show I am adding it to my collection. The sound quality of this is perfect! The show itself is very good! Mitch's accompaniment is extra cool this night. He comes up with some sweet backing riffs all throughout the show.
Thanks Scott! This is amazing!

Being new to Steve Kimock Band, this was my second show. It is so incredible, and the quality is greater than pretty much all recordings of them. I would reccomned this to anyone who likes jam and or funk type music. 5/5

of a very good though short show. I have NEVER heard a recording with better stereo imaging - the musicians are absolutely placed on stage, just the way I heard the show live - a thing of beauty, and rather startling - makes other recordings seem flat and muddy to me.
The performance is pretty darn good, too. I've been listening to Mitch's solo on Electric Wildlife over and over and over - astonishing phrasing, meaningfully building his riffs, with more restraint and taste than the Mitch of old. Things is looking up!
