walter isaacson is a truly convey veal writer. i would follow walter anywhere and the thing that i think elevates walter above a lot of other writers is his mixture of curiosity and expense sense of intelligence. walter obviously has written about some of the most remarkable people in civilization, whether it's leonardo or benjamin frank lindh or steve jobs and he he's able to. einstein. i think he i think that walter's ability to traverse the worlds of science and culture to to find the artistry and imagination and genius in his characters is what's made him a really extraordinary author. i read everything he writes. susan orlean. susan orlean is well, i love susan orlean. i think susan orlean is one of the greatest literary journalists alive. and and what i mean by literary journalists is that it's not just that she's a really terrific reporter. she's got a great eye for detail. but what makes susan orlean special is that she is she is funny as hell. she's got a great sense of humor. she loves people. she loves what she writes a

i do think on one hand it's not a huge shock in the sense that anyone who read walter isaacson's pre-auger fee is familiar with this idea that elon had to be talked into this model and he wanted to be talked out of it. we will be able to build self driving vehicles rendering the cheap car useless. the problem with that is that he has been trying to do this for eight years. it has been selling full self-driving and he just doesn't have it. it is an increasingly capable system and at other times it doesn't work. it is not say. he issues this dictate to his employees that they need to demonstrate this before every sale and he himself puts in his email this is a supervised system. this company is a long way from being able to offer a robotaxis so this idea they would cancel an affordable car that they desperately need us hard to believe. caroline: let's talk about the desperate need. some citing byd, is thought antagonizing the cost perspective? craig: we only have to look at the numbers that came out this week. the model three model why are running out of the ability to squeeze more juice out

we go back to the walter isaacson biography from months ago and one of the more compelling it's within the book was this idea that there was a real difference at the top of tesla as to whether or not, you know, they should design this next generation vehicle with or without a steering wheel. within the book you had this really compelling section of executives having to kind of talk mosque out of this idea that they could just designed the car without a steering wheel and count on the idea that the technology was ready. i think that is something have seen for some time, this idea that elon musk has sort of been out on a limb in terms of how quickly this company will be able to put self driving cars on the road. what other executives have said, putting engineers who have had to testify in lawsuit related to people losing their lives because they put too much trust into the tesla driver assistance system. this is something that is really tricky if you are an executive that has to square that circle. caroline: -- ed: quickly recapping the basics, 10% of the work or's cut. where is that? cr

this also meshes with walter isaacson's biography that musk had to be talked into sticking to this plan of bringing this cheaper electric vehicle to market. lisa: martin ever heard -- ev said they need to be focused onerhard cost -- everhard said they need to focus more on the cost and not technology for the sake of technology. how much is this the sake of technology? craig: when i heard him make those comments i thought, musk is all but certain to weigh in on this at some point today. the two of them had eight messy a falling out going back many years when he left the company. this idea that robotaxis and other companies pursuing them aren't offering them to consumers. the reason is they are really expensive. the hardware that it takes for these to work and work safely really costs quite a bit. we have seen that tesla has taken this approach of putting hardware into all of its cars regardless of whether people pay for that technology that they have marketed as full self marketing and try to use hardware that isn't really enough to get to this point of it being able to offer full autono
