Nice story Scijosh! I was there that night as well. Me and my girlfriend at the time had been in Athens the night before visiting old friends. We had a hotel in Buckhead and had bought tickets online. For some reason we called the venue to see what time doors opened and they told us there was some kind of mess up on people who bought online tickets. But they gave us a name to ask for at the door to get in.
I remember walking up a huge flight of steps for where they were playing, and it was packed to the gills. Before the show started I met Ben in the men's room and he was really cool. The first set for me sucked because I was toward the back and the talking was off the hook, Jeff even said something about it.
For the second set we Jimmied our way in down front and hung out with a girl who's name I can't remember, but I think she went to school with Jeff and Dave. There are some pics out there somewhere she took that night. Anywho, Ben had on a Steelers jersey, I think 36 Bettis and we had a wild time. One of many, after that I went to Illinois, St Louis and Lawrence for the shows Tim O'Brien opened for.....good times!

So, I am persusing some of my old recordings, many of which, I no longer have the masters. This particular night has a great story. I was allowed into Smith's "extra special, top-secret recording room". I had permission from the band, like always, to pull a sbd.
The first set was lackluster. The band was clearly frustrated with the dense cloud of tobacco smoke and the incessant chatter from those in attendance. At setbreak, Ricky and I jumped backstage and gave the band a pep-talk. It was like watching a half-time speech in a movie.
Listen to the difference in the energy between the first and second sets. The second set, for the record, freakin smokes!
another interesting tidbut: I think that this was one of the first nights that Casey (road manager), tried to keep the band from hanging out with us after the show. This trend continued across the country for the remainder of 2002. I remember having to promise to behave myself at the Warfield. I guess we were a bad influence...
