HLI W' Although the year ended up very dry, most of Montana's small grain crops ended up near average. The year started off with good moisture supplies, benefiting from the reserves of the very wet 1993 season. The rains basically quit after mid-June and estimated yields deteriorated after that. All wheat production for the state ended up at 170.6 million bushels, down over 17% from 1993's record year. Yields for 1994 averaged 31.7 bushels per acre, down from 39.2 the previous year. Winter wheat yields fared the best due to it's early development characteristics and utilization of the good spring moisture. The average yield for winter wheat, down 7 bushels from a year ago. was set at 35 bushels per acre. Total production was off over 37% from last year not only due to a lower yield, but also to a smaller amount of acreage. Farmers weren't able to plant as much last fall because of the late, wet season. Production is estimated at 64.8 million bushels. The decrease in winter wheat acreage was made up by a big increase in spring wheat. The increase in spring wheat acres allowed farmers to harvest the largest spring wheat crop on record. Spring wheat production was estimated at 100.5 million bushels, nearly 1% more than last year's record crop. Spring wheat yields averaged 30 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from 1993. Harvested acreage was 3.35 million acres, up 650 thousands acres from a year ago. Durum wheat acreage also showed a large increase over 1993. Harvested acreage was estimated at 178 thousand acres, up 64 thousand from last year. Total production was 5.34 million bushels with an average yield of 30 bushels per acre. Barley harvested acreage increased slightly over last year, while yields fell 14 bushels per acre to 44 bushels per acre. Total production, at 52.8 million bushels, was off over 17% from a year ago. Oat yields fell 17 bushels per acre from 1993 and averaged 48 bushels per acre. Total production of oats was 3.6 million bushels, down nearly 35% from last year.
