Bryophyte Regions of California Speaker: Daniel Norris Research Botanist, University Herbarium, University of California, Berkeley Dr. Daniel Norris, our new Chapter Bryophyte Coordinator, will take this opportunity to share with us his thoughts on possible bryophyte regions of California. The diversity of elevations, climates, and geography in California have long been utilized in a mapping of the state by vascular plant taxonomists; are such biogeographic regions of California useful also to bryologists? Do the very different life require- ments of bryophytes require us to map the state in a different manner? What morphological features of individual bryophytes especially enable them to occupy each of the major climatologic regions of the state? The meeting will take place in the Conference Center of the University of California Botanical Garden on Centen- nial Drive, east of Memorial Stadium, above the main campus of the University of California in Berkeley. The Garden gate will open at 7 p.m. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. CNPS books and other publications will be on display and available for purchase. Please contact Holly Forbes, 234-2913, if you have any questions. Plant Sale Activities Work sessions this month: Tuesdays, January 9, 16, 23, 30 (not Jan. 2) 9 a.m.-noon, rain or shine. Merritt College Landscape Horticulture grounds January is the last month we will be selling plants weekly (on Tuesdays). Drop by to see what is still available in addition to the overstocked plants men- tioned in last month's Bay Leaf. Work sessions for volunteers at this time of year are generally focussed on preparing cuttings to go into the greenhouse. Newcomers are welcome. For further information, call (925) 376-4095 or (510) 525-6614. P.S. Last year at about this time a generous CNPS mem- bers appeared with an armful of beautiful Dendromecon harfordii cuttings from her garden in the Oakland hills. Thanks to her, we were able to offer this very desirable plant in our October sale. Our dilemma is: we didn't get her name. We are hoping she will call or visit again . . . . . . Shirley Native Plant Restoration Activities East Bay Chapter Alerts Native Here Nursery Making your New Years resolutions? Been meaning to include CNPS involvement as one of the things you'd like to do? Consider volunteering at Native Here Nursery, 101 Golf Course Drive, Tilden Park. Some of the ways you could help are: volunteer on Fridays — help sow seed, pot up seedlings, groom plants, weed, tidy the nursery, sell plants; volunteer on Saturdays — help sow seed, pot up seedlings, groom plants, water, sell plants; volunteer to take trash to the dump about once a month; volunteer to take paper and cardboard to recycle about once a month; substitute for the Wednesday waterer when she is on vacation; plan to collect seed on Tuesday mornings during the months of May through October, or collect seed on your own for Native Here. To volunteer at the nursery, just show up when it is open, no need to call ahead. To volunteer at other times, leave a message at the nursery, 549-0211. Messages are picked up on Fridays and Saturdays. . . . Charli Danielsen Native Plant Restoration Team Return to Canyon School on January 6 Please join the Team for an afternoon of creekside work under the redwoods in bucolic Canyon. This is our annual winter work party at the beautiful Canyon School. There's French broom, ivy and Himalayan blackberry to pull — and lots of lovely natives, including hazelnut, clematis, huge redwoods and ferns galore. Please note that we have switched back to our winter (afternoon) schedule so folks can attend the EBRPD Botanic Garden lectures: meet at 1 p.m. at Native Here Nursery on Saturday, Jan. 6, or at Canyon School on Pinehurst Road at about 1:45 p.m. Wear pants and a long sleeved shirt, sturdy shoes, bring a water bottle and rain coat just in case. We have gloves and tools to lend. Heavy rain cancels; call 840-9367 if it's coming down. On Feb. 3 we will return to upper Claremont Canyon/ Gwin Canyon for Mayten Mayhem, starting at 1 p.m. at Native Here or 1:45 p.m. on site. In March we will work in Arrowhead Marsh with Save the Bay; April finds us back at Gwin Canyon; May will see us with Friends of Orinda Creeks. For a monthly Team email update, please send a note to casartunda@aol.com. . . . Noah Booker NEW! Some of the earliest flowering shrubs in the East Bay will be blooming, such as huckleberries, silk tassel, currants, and 2 or 3 species of manzanita. The 3-mile loop trail will have a long ascent and descent, with switchbacks. Parking is limited, so participants are encouraged to share rides. There are chemical toilets, but no running water taps at the parking lot. Directions: From Berkeley, drivers can follow Grizzly Peak Blvd. until it becomes Skyline Blvd. in Oakland. Follow Skyline as it winds south until the turnoff to the Huckle- berry parking lot appears on the left, shortly after the turnoff to Sibley. From Oakland south of Montclair, take Skyline Blvd. north and parking lot to Huckleberry Park will appear around the end of a right curve, after the intersection of Snake and Skyline Blvd. From Hwy. 13, take the Mo raga /Thornhill exit, and follow Thornhill Blvd. up the hill. Thornhill has numerous switchbacks, so stay on the road with the double yellow line. Thornhill will merge with Snake at a stop sign. Drivers should turn left onto Snake and the stop sign at Snake and Skyline will appear almost immediately. Turn left and follow signs to the parking lot. Saturday, February 24: Roy Buck will lead a field trip to Redwood Regional Park featuring leatherwood in flower (Dirca occidentalis). The trip will start at 10 a.m. and last until about 3 p.m. The route will include some steep hill climbs on a 4-5 mile loop, including a vertical gain of 600-700 feet. Participants will cross through redwood forest, mixed evergreen forest, coastal scrub and a small chaparral area. Bring lunch and water. Check the February Bay Leaf for parking and directions, because access has changed since the construction of the Chabot Science Center. Winter 2000-2001 The annual Wayne Roderick Lecture Series is being held at the Regional Parks Botanic Garden, Wildcat Canyon Road and South Park Drive in Tilden Park, Berkeley (841-8732). The lectures are held on Saturday mornings as indicated, 10:30 a.m.-12 noon, and are free to the public. The Lecture Series runs through February 2000. January 6 Speaker The botany of Pt.
