Issued October 1995 United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Bibliographies and Literature of Agriculture No. 129 Vertebrate Pest Conference Bibliography and Index to the Proceedings, 1 st-1 6th (1962-94) By Laurie A. Paulik1 1Laurie A. Paulik is a Librarian (Biological Sciences) at the Denver Wildlife Research Center, a unit of the Animal Damage Control division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Introduction "Vertebrate Pest Conference: Bibliography and Index to the Proceedings 1 st— 1 6th (1962-94)" is intended to aid researchers, field personnel, students, and all others interested in the vertebrate pest management field. Entries in the bibliography have unique record numbers and are arranged alphabetically by first author. The subject index follows the bibliography and uses key- words to group papers by topic. An author index, located at the back of the publication, lists all authors of each paper. There are several important factors to note in using the index. Opening and closing remarks were not indexed; keynote addresses and other works of a broad or philosophic nature or works that could not be indexed under stand-alone entries were placed under the heading "Wildlife Damage Management (general)" near the end of the index. Papers giving a general overview of vertebrate pests of a particular country were indexed under country name only. Laboratory studies on a particular rodenticide were generally indexed under the name of the rodenticide only, not the species of laboratory animals studied. In review or survey papers that cover all control techniques used in certain areas or for certain species, only those techniques covered in some depth were indexed. However, some items mentioned briefly but of recurring interest were also indexed. Lack of standardization in use of mammal and bird names throughout the 30 years covered by the proceed- ings caused numerous indexing difficulties. The follow- ing conventions and exceptions will apply. Common bird pest species of North America were indexed by the most useful direct name. This name may or may not differ from the name as standardized in the "A.O.U. Check-list of North American Birds (6th ed.)" and updated in the "Check-list of North American Birds" (Tucson Audubon Society 1990). Thus, papers on coots are found under that term rather than "American coots," and articles on starlings were indexed under that term rather than European starlings. Birds referred to in papers by generic terms such as "blackbirds" or "crows" were indexed under those terms. Red-winged blackbirds were indexed under the term "blackbirds." North American mammals (other than rodents) were indexed only by their common names. Some rodent genera in which there are multiple species of interest and for which there are many papers were indexed by subject under a collective common name (e.g., ground squirrels) and by species under the Latin name. Worldwide commensal rodent species (Norway rats, roof rats, house mice, etc.) were indexed under their common names. Bird and mammal species from areas other than North America were indexed by scientific name unless the common name provides more direct access (e.g., jackals). All taxonomic names follow "Mammal Species of the World: ATaxonomic and Geographic Reference" (Smithsonian Institution Press 1 993) except where current common usage dictates otherwise. Endangered species were indexed under their standardized names as listed in the "Official World Wildlife Fund Guide to Endangered Species of North America" (Beacham Publishing 1990). Names of countries other than the United States and names of islands were included in the index, but U.S. States generally were not. The preponderance of articles from certain States, especially California in the early "Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings," would have rendered the inclusion of State names as index items almost meaningless. Most articles dealing with damage deal with control also. The term "control" was given preference in this index and was used as a subheading under many animal species. The term "damage" appears less frequently. Editorial liberties were taken to standardize author names and italicization of species names throughout the 16 volumes of proceedings. 1 Acknowledgements Many people in the U.S. Department of Agriculture/ Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Animal Damage Control/Denver Wildlife Research Center (DWRC) contributed to this project. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Luana A. Whitehead, of DWRC's Gainesville, FL, field station, in compiling the bibliography. Without her initial work in entering all the conference papers into a special computerized format, the project may never have gotten started. I'd like to thank Barbara Recktenwald of DWRC's program and research support section for her recommendations, guidance, and word processing expertise. Her abilities were utilized extensively to plan and produce a cohe- sive, readable work. The DWRC wildlife biologists who listened to my ideas and provided suggestions and direction in this effort deserve special thanks. Finally, I gratefully acknowledge Mike Avery of the Gainesville field station for working with me to initiate this project, reviewing various drafts, suggesting improvements, and coordinating publication of the index. 2 Conference Proceedings 1994.
