Ainerican Plants ja Sbeubs

ITEA VIRGINICA

COLLECTED AND GROWN BY

Wm. fr. Bassett & Son,

Wak

Hammonton, New Jersey, U. S. A.

herms and Remaris.

Our Terms are net cash, and are for the quantities named, except that 5, 50 and 500 will be furnished at the ten, hundred, and thousand rates respectively. Parties not known by us to be responsible and reliable will be expected to send cash with order, or good references.

Shipping Facilities. Our nurseries are within thirty miles of Philadelphia (two railroads), and one hundred miles from New York, and freight rates very low.

Mailing Plants. Small orders will be filled by mail, when so requested, where the size of the plant will permit ; but postage will be added to all bills so forwarded.

Collected Plants. This is our original specialty, and we collect plants in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, and we also have arrangements with special collectors in the New England and other states. This collecting is all done by skilled men, and the plants so collected are not to be compared with ‘‘cheap collected plants’ pulled up by irresponsible parties at so much per thousand. We aim to get the very best, especially in those species that are difficult to transplant, and we send out only such as we could succeed with ourselves; but as we cannot control weather conditions or other circumstances where we send them, we cannot, of course, assume any responsibility farther than to ship them in good order.

Transplanted Stock. To meet the wants of an increasing list of customers, we have for several years been transplanting the best varieties of our native shrubs and hardy plants into our nursery grounds, and growing them under culture for one or more years.

Packing, which is done in a most thorough manner, is charged at cost. We use the best of sphagnum moss.

ho our Quropean Rriends.

We havea good list of European customers, and our system of packing is such that our shipments have arrived in perfect condition. We wish, however, to say to this class of customers that Fall orders are much more desirable, as the dormant condition of stock shipped at that season admits of closer packing, and consequently safer transit.

Jfovelties and Specialties.

Amelanchier Rotundifolium

We have found this so much superior to Amelanchier Canadensis in every respect, that we unhesitatingly recommend it. Its style of growth is more compact, the foliage is more dense, and of a richer, darker green, turning to rich shades of crimson and gold in Autumn; and the strain we offer produces, in great abundance, berries which are much larger, less seedy, and of better flavor than any other June Berry. For cooking, when used with pie cherries, equal quantities of each, they make better pies and puddings than cherries alone.

Pyrus Brilliantissima

It is not necessary to say to those who are familiar with the common Pyrus arbutitolia, that the fruit varies in color from red to almost black, and that the greater portion, even of those which are light red when first ripening, turn quite dark and dull later in the season. Our Brilliantissima has been propagated from a few plants we found, which produced bright scarlet berries and retain their bright color until late in the Winter. This is so decidedly superior to the ordinary form that the little difference in first cost is not worth considering. Our stock of this is unusually fine.

Hibiscus Crimson Eye

This, the finest of all the hardy Hibiscus, was introduced by us and has been steadily gaining in popularity, and our sales of it increase largely every year. We also introduced the Rose Pink Hibiscus, and we are among the very few who offer Hibiscus Militaris, both fine varieties.

Hardy Perennials

Special attention is called to our large and varied stock of Hardy Perennials. Our stock includes the very best standard varieties, and many of the newer sorts. On large orders, one thousand or more, we can quote special prices.

Plants not in this List

There are many native plants not included in this list, which we can collect if desired. We can collect nine varieties of Kupatorium, twenty varieties of Aster, eighteen varieties of Solidago, and many others.

Dahlias Our stock of Dahlias includes the best standard varieties and the cream of the newer sorts,—about two hundred varieties. Dahlia list mailed on application.

Seeds

We collect American tree and shrub seeds on orders only. Prices quoted on application.

Large Plants

We make a specialty of large plants, collected with ball of earth, in carload lots. In this list may be mentioned [ex glabra, Ilex opaca, Kalmia latifolia, Azalea viscosa, Vaccinium corymbosum, Viburnum cassinoides, etc. These are unusually fine specimens of each variety, ranging in size from one to six feet, according to variety. Special prices on carload lots.
