W. & D.’s Exhibition Brand Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley Pips

(Ready for Delivery in November)

The Lily of the Valley is one of the most useful and greatly admired plants grown; the modest bell-shaped flowers of purest white are highly prized for cutting purposes, and for flowering in pots in the Winter they are exceedingly well adapted and will last several weeks in beauty. By taking them in at intervals a succession of flowers may be kept up all Winter. For forcing the pips should always be used, being especially selected for that purpose; they are all extra heavy, 3-year-old crowns and every one can be relied upon to produce at least one, and very often two, well-developed flower spikes. Plant in flats or pots (about twelve pips in a 6-in. pot) with all the fibrous roots carefully preserved, and keep the crowns above the soil. Place them in a tem- perature of about 80 degrees, cover the crowns with loose moss, and keep them constantly moist. They should flower in about five weeks.

& D.’s Extra Selected Strong Berlin Pips, Exhibition Brand. This srade °{ Llly °f the Valley

we recommend as the very best.

The pips are large and plump with plenty of fibrous roots, giving extra long spikes of bloom with from 12 to 15 large, well-developed bells and strong, healthy foliage. This grade has given excellent satis- faction wherever grown. Doz. 40c., 100 $2.50, 1000 $24.00.

SELECTED DRESDEN PIPS. Like the preceding, this grade is also very carefully selected; pips are heavy and plump, but being grown in a somewhat heavier soil they do not force quite as quickly as the Berlin pips; they are more adapted for second early and late forcing; excellent quality. Doz. 35c., 100 $2.25, 1000 $22.00.

Cold Storage Lily of the Valley Pips

Lily of the Valley Clumps

(Ready about 1st of November)

Are generally used for outdoor planting and should be placed in a shaded locality, where they can be left permanently. They are the most popular of Spring-flowering plants, and are greatly admired on account of their graceful appearance and delicate, bell-shaped, pure white flowers, highly prized for cutting in the early Spring. They are the most charming when grown in large patches, in partially shaded localities around the lawn, near the borders of streams, lakes, etc., being perfectly hardy. Selected Clumps. Each 30c., doz. $3.00, 100 $20.00.

Cultural Directions for Hyacinths

Planting in the Open Ground. October and November is the proper time, but they can be set out any time as long as the ground is open and the bulbs remain sound. The bulbs should be planted evenly about six inches deep (to the bottom of the bulbs), and from five to six inches apart; if planted at uneven depths they will not bloom at the same time, but irregularly.

W. S; D.’s Selected Single Named Hyacinths

Extra Selected Top Size or Monster Bulbs (Exhibition Varieties)

The bulbs of the varieties offered under this heading are of enormous size and will produce immense trusses and bells of the most perfect shape. We recommend this size especially for show and exhibition purposes, and where the finest results are desired. The supply is limited, therefore the price is high, but they are well worth the money.

Directions for Culture in Pots. Fill the pots with a light, rich potting soil, and have the tops of the bulbs just above the surface; give a good watering and set away in a cool place, covering them with about five inches of sand or coal ashes. In about eight weeks they may be taken to the room in which they are to flower. By bringing in a few pots at a time about two weeks apart, a succession of bloom may be had.

Glass Culture. Single Hyacinths do better than Double in glasses, as they produce a much larger and more showy truss. Place the bulbs in the glasses, which should be filled with water so it touches the bottom of the bulbs; put them in a closed box in a cool place, or on a shelf in the dark part of the cellar, for from six to eight weeks, changing the water every ten days or two weeks; then remove them to the light. If then placed in a cool room they will produce very fine spikes and remain in bloom a long time. A small piece of charcoal in the water is beneficial.

JACQUES. Rose pink. Enormous loose spike of a perfect pyra- mid shape. No other truss comes near to it in size. Each 25c., doz. $2.50.

La VirtoirP (Victory). Brilliant dark pink. It is one

of the showiest and brightest bedders. When

planted outside the larger flower has a brilliant red color and is held upright by a strong stem. When forced, the color is a brilliant, dark pink, which fully answers to the taste of the American public. Every grower who has tried it praises it highly and it is a prize-taker at every exhibition. Each 30c., doz. $3.00.

Koh-i-noor. Lovely rose pink. The medium-sized, semi-double bells form an unusually long and handsome spike, which is a prize-taker at every exhibition. Each 25c,. doz. $2.50.

Lady Derby Bright rose pink. Is rapidly becoming the

leading pink, owing to its lovely shade of

pink, its perfect spike on a strong stem, and its splendid forcing qualities. Each 25c., doz. $2.50. ;

MORENO. Lively pink; extra large truss. One of the earliest pinks and one of the most popular varieties in Europe, where it is used in enormous quantities. Each 20c., doz. $2.25.

Queen of the Blues. Light blue with, silvery appearance, large spike, splendid flower; an exhibition' variety of great merit. Each 25c., doz. $2.50.

Enchantress Most delicate porcelain blue. Makes a

splendid, well-finished, compact truss. The

light center of the bells makes the flower look like the beautiful Czar Peter. It was a great favorite atVhe Haarlem show in 1910, and will undoubtedly become a leader. Each 30c., doz. $3.00.

KING OF THE BLUES. Rich dark blue. One of the largest flowers existing, splendid, well finished truss of a most brilliant shade of indigo blue; excellent for late forcing and bedding. Each 25c., doz. $2.50.

Grand Lilas. Dark lilac. Used to be the most popular blue. Has been superseded by others, but still is a very recommend- able variety, specially for early forcing. Each 25c., doz. $2.50.

La frranHp<i<if» Snow white. Is still the queen of the ^ White Hyacinths. The intense white- ness of the large, fleshy bells, the size and shape of the truss are not yet equalled. Should not be forced after the middle of March, because the stem grows too tall after that time. Each 30c., doz. $3.00.

L’lNNOCENCE. Pure white, large truss. The leading white for forcing as well as bedding. Used in immense quantities in all sizes. Each 20c., doz. $2.25.

Selected Named Hyacinths

(Second Size)

This grade of named Hyacinths is the best value offered in Hyacinths. Being of the same age as first size bulbs from which they are the second selection, many varieties will produce spikes nearly as large as the former, so that they are splendid for grow- ing in pans or three in a pot. They will produce much better effects when grown in borders than unnamed Hyacinths, not only that the quality is so much better, but a single variety used for a certain shade of color is far more pleasing than a mixture, while the price difference is only slight.

We only fist the varieties most in demand in second size, but shall be pleased to supply this size of any variety desired.

SINGLE EARLY TULIPS

Tulips are perhaps the most popular of all Spring-flowering bulbs, and are extensively used for forcing and bedding. For growing under glass the cultural directions given for Hyacinths should be followed. For bedding they should be planted 5 to 6 inches apart and 5 inches deep to the bottom of the bulb.

The best time for planting is in October and until the ground freezes late in November.

TULIPS ARE READY FOR DELIVERY IN SEPTEMBER

The varieties marked 1 generally begin to flower the 20th of April, those marked 2 after the first of May.

ARRANGEMENTS OF COLORS FOR BEDDING

In selecting varieties for bedding, we suggest the following combinations. The approximate height of each varietv is indicated in our general list. The tallest should be planted in the center and the dwarfest on the outside of the bed.

DARWIN TULIPS

The Most Exquisite Race of the Late-Flowering Tulips

We strongly recommend this class of Tulips for garden decoration in beds as well as in groups, in the herbaceous border and among shrubs. Grown for cut flowers, they will prove very valuable at a time when our gardens yield so little to decorate our rooms. They flower during the middle part of May, when the Spring flowers are over and the Summer- flowers, such as Roses, have not yet come in. Their chief characteristics are the perfect cup-shape of the flowers and the blue, black or white coloring at the base of the petals inside of the flowers.

Another very characteristic quality of Darwins is that the color inside of the flower is just as bright as, and some- times even brighter than, outside. This is why a Darwin remains beautiful, even when it is fully open or almost gone.

By slowly forcing in pots, they may be had in bloom in March or even earlier. Most of the varieties improve in color by protection under glass or canvas. The list of varieties we offer below is carefully selected and includes nothing but fine varieties. We have discarded a great many varieties which we considered inferior to those we now offer.

Darwin Tulips excel in brilliancy of colors, perfect form of flowers, very tall stems, and are now the most popular type of Tulips

IRIS

Iris Hispanica (Spanish Iris)

The Spanish Irises flower two weeks before the English and differ from them considerably, the colors of the flowers being showier and more varied. The curious and charming blendings of shades in the same flower give them the appear- ance of many of our rare Orchids. For vases and bouquets the cut flowers are greatly prized as they last long when cut and the buds open well in water. They are quite hardy out of doors, requiring only slight mulching in Winter. Also excellent for forcing.

Our bulbs are large and will give best results.

Scilla campanulata

Watsonia Ardernei (O Brieni)

Highly recommendable for forcing

(Bulbs ready October to November)

A splendid bulbous plant of rare beauty and especially valuable for cutting; produces its pure white cube-shaped flowers in great abundance on long stiff stems. The flowers somewhat resemble those of the Freesia but are much larger and longer. When forced the spikes often attain a height of 4 to 4 feet, forming a straight center spike from which 3 to 4 lateral shoots branch off, all of which grow up erect and are thickly covered with flowers of the. purest white. A vase of Watsonias is a rare attrac- tion. Bulbs can be grown in pots or benches but should be forced slowly, otherwise treat the same as the Gladioli. For outdoor planting a sunny place protected from the North and West winds should be selected.

Strong Selected Bulbs. Doz. $1.00, 100 $6.00.

Sauromatum Guttatum

(Monarch of the East)

A remarkable flower, attracting immediate attention. The only treatment required is to simply place the large bulb on a table or shelf in a warm room or greenhouse, and within a few weeks a curiously formed flower from 16 to 18 inches long develops. Extra large bulbs. Each 25c., doz. $2.50.

Scillas

We keep on drawing the attention of our customers to the splendid qualities for naturalizing of Scilla campanu- lata. They will flower in shady places, where almost any other flower will die. They have bells like small Hya- cinths, forming long and graceful spikes.

Weeber & DON’S Superior Lawn Grass Mixtures

Composed only of the Finest Dwarf Evergreen Grasses

W. & D.’s Evergreen Lawn Grass

To make a good lawn good seed is absolutely essential

We have made many experiments in order to ascertain just what is the best mixture for Permanent Lawns and the grasses which are best suited to this climate. W. & D.’s Evergreen Lawn Grass is composed of a combination of various fine-leaved, deep-rooting perennial grasses, carefully blended, and thoroughly mixed so that the results from its sowing is a uniform growth of rich green grass, growing at different seasons of the year so that a deep green velvety sward is maintained from early Spring until late in the Fall.

The ingredients of this mixture are the highest grade of re-cleaned seeds only, free from chaff and weeds, and careful experi- ments have convinced us that WT. & D.’s Evergreen Lawn Grass will give most satisfactory results.

One pound of this mixture will sow 400 square feet, one hundred pounds will sow one acre.

Weight per measured bushel, 24 lbs.

PRICE— Per lb., 35c.; per 10 lbs., $3.00; per 25 lbs., $7.00; per 100 lbs. $25.00

COMPRESSED AIR SPRAYERS

Auto Compressed Air Sprayer No. 1

This is without a doubt the standard of all Compressed Air Sprayers. It consists of a four-gallon reservoir, made of heavy material, either Brass or Galvanized Steel as ordered. It is operated by working an Air Pump, with which air is compressed on top of the solution. A few strokes of the plunger will compress enough air to operate the machine several minutes and two pumpings will discharge all of the contents. This sprayer is made of heavy material throughout, and the Brass machine, which we strongly recommend, is practically indestructible, because it cannot be affected by the various spray solutions. No other Sprayer will do such a variety of work, and do it so well. The cut shows the Air Chamber and Reservoir, also Auto Pop Nozzle.

A Few Hints for Success with Peonies

The best time to plant Peony roots is from September 15, to November 1. Early planting is recommended as it enables the roots to become established in their new posit- ion before winter sets in. Although they succeed in most any soil and under all condit- ions it will amply repay you to.give special attention to the preparation of the soil before planting, especially if exhibition flowers are wanted. A Peony once set out is a permanent investment an'd if well planted pays its annual dividend of delight to its owner.

Spade the soil as deeply as possible and add a liberal supply of Well Rotted manure to it, if this is not obtainable, sheep manure is recommended. Fork over three or four times so as to get the soil finely pulverized and the manure thoroughly mixed with it. Where space is limited, the roots may be set 2 to 2*4 feet apart each way and the upper eyes should be about 2 inches under the soil, Deep planting often causes blind growth. Watering is not necessary after planting, but is very beneficial in early spring after growth appears above ground, and if rains prove infrequent, bed should be well watered at least once a week, this will help to promote strong growth and produce large flowers.

Peonies often bring forth 3 or 4 buds on a stem all of which should be removed except the large center bud if fine large blooms are wanted.

The Peony is practically free from diseases and insects; the ants often seen on the buds do no harm and disappear before the flower opens.

It is perfectly hardy even in the most severe climate and requires no protection except possibly the first winter after planting while the roots are still loose in the ground. Keep the soil free from weeds at all times and do not cut down the foliage before Septem. ber as it is needed for the developement of eyes for next season.

Our list includes only the cream of the most modern sorts , and the roots we send out are extra strong, well established and have grown a full year in the field since division.

HERBACEOUS PEONIES (Paeonia albiflora)

SPIRAEA Rubens (Arends)

A grand new Deep Pink Spirea. The latest of all Mr. Arends’ wonderful productions. Careful tests and comparisons with other varieties have established the following points in its favor:

The color is a lovely deep carmine-rose, much deeper than Queen Alexandra. The habit is the same as of the well-known “Gladstone,” and it possesses the same excellent qualities for forcing. When forced early, the color is just as deep car- mine-rose as when used in May, and in this respect is much superior to all other pink varieties. Large, heavy clumps, 50 cts. each, $5 per doz., $30 per 100.

Freesia hybrida Ragionieri

The New Colored Freesia

Freesia hybrida Ragionieri
