Asters are one of the most important summer and autumn flowers, and for a number of years I have been making exhaustive tests of both home-grown and imported stocks with a view to offering only the choicest kinds, regardless of cost. As a result of this care my list comprises only such sorts as can be planted with confidence that noth- ing better is procurable as a Cut Bloom. The collection includes the Early, Mid-Season and Late Varieties, all of the choicest colors. The height of the plants and diameter of the blossoms will vary according to condition of soil and the skill of the grower. Asters require new soil each year, and very rich. It cannot be made any too rich; and require an abundance of water during the growing season. With special cultural skill, the height of' plants and the diameter of blossoms will Exceed the measurement given.

LATE BRANCHING ASTERS The Famous American Aster Seeds Grown in Oregon.

This superb strain of American origin, is especially adapted to our climatic condition; it has long been one of Florist leading special- ties, as a cut bloom. The plants form strong, branching bushes, 2 to 2]4. feet high, bearing on long, strong stems their handsome Chrysan- themum-like flowers, which under ordinary cultivation, average 5 inches across. The form of the flowers, together with the length of the stems, places them at the head of Asters for cutting. They come into bloom from two to three weeks after the average type, usually being at their best during September, and Ailing in the gap between the general run of Asters and Chrysanthemums; and all things considered, are the most valuable of all Asters either for cutting or for bedding.

GIANT HOHENZOLLERN ASTERS

This type is of German origin, seeds grown in Germany, and is very handsome with immense plumy flowers, long and heavy stems, a grand type for cutting or for bedding. Height of plants 28 inches diameter of blossoms, 5 inches, and by disbranching and disbudding will produce blossoms 6 to 7 inches in diameter. Blooming in August. When used for cutting the flowers should be picked when about half expanded and allowed to develop in water in a cool room.

As fine as any Chrysanthemum, and when cut keeps longer in good condition than any Aster. This type will blossom mid-August on through September. __

IMPROVED GIANT CREGO ASTERS

This Superb Aster is grown in Oregon and by the most careful and painstaking selection it has been brought to a state of perfection hitherto unknown in this type. The immense, fluffy flowers are most beautifully formed averaging 4 to 5 inches in diameter and very full to the center. The form of the flower, together with the length of the stem, places it at the head of Asters for cutting. The plants are free-blooming and vigorous, producing strong stems 24 inches in length. Plants attaining a height of 30 inches will blossom in August on through September.

SMITH’S PEERLESS ASTERS This Superb Late Aster is of American origin and will be found very valuable as a cut bloom. This is one of the largest and best Asters now in the market. It has reached a state of perfection which makes it very valuable to the florist. The plants are of strong, sturdy habit of growth, bearing their handsome Chrysanthemum-like flowers on stiff stems measuring 2 feet and over in length.

The blossoms average about 5 inches in diameter and the pretty curving of its petals makes it a most artistic and finely finished flower.

This type in bloom the last week in August on through Septem- ber. Height 30 inches.

IMPROVED “ROCHESTER” ASTERS In size and beauty the Rochester is equal to the CREGO ASTER. It comes into bloom about ten days earlier. The color is a most exquisite shade of lavender pink. The petals are very long and narrow and so curled as to give the flower a most beautiful appear- ance. The robust growth of this Aster makes possible its long, vigorous stems, giving the plant an exceedingly graceful appearance with its immense feathery flowers. ANTIRRHINUMS (Snapdragons)

Within the last few years Snapdragons have become immensely popular. This is not to be wondered at, whether used for cutting or for show in the garden, they are one of the most valuable flowers which can readily be grown from seed. The following list are of two distinct types, the large-flowering, tall-growing, or Giant; and the equally large-flowered half-dwarf variety.
