“To build a house, with Love for architect, Ranks first and foremost in the joys of life. And in a tiny cabin shaped for two.

The space for happiness is just as great As in a palace. What a world were this If each soul born received a plot of ground A little plot, whereon a home might rise, And beauteous green things grow.”

HIS condensed list of Hardy Plants and Bulbs is issued in the hope that it may induce the planting of this stock by those who do not yet know the charm of the Hardy Garden,

And to those whose borders are now attractive with perennials, we trust we can offer something to increase their attractiveness.

No better Bulbs and Plants are grown anywhere than those from Wayside Gar- dens, large, sturdy and having at least one full season of outdoor growth before offered for sale, and are properly packed to reach you in good condition.

The list of varieties is purposely lim- ited in number to those that are the best and most satisfactory and selection does not become a tedious undertaking.

While the better the soil and cultiva- tion, the better will be the results, none of these are difficult to grow and will give results with a minimum of care.

We can not too strongly recommend fall planting for results the first season. Set in their permanent positions in Sep- tember or early October, the roots soon make new growth and are well estab- lished before cold weather and with the first warm days of spring are ready to start into growth and will furnish a wealth of bloom the first season.

TULIPS (For Fall Planting)

The Darwin and Cottage Tulips are so far super- ior to the early flowering varieties that we list no others.

They bloom the latter part of May and the flow- ers which never open flat, are borne on strong tall stems, two feet and more in height.

The colorings are indescribably beautiful and for convenience in selection we have divided them into three groups, the colors of the varieties in each group harmonizing with each other both in the garden and when cut.

DELPHINIUM (Hardy Larkspur)

The Delphiniums are strictly hardy plants which in good soil send up stalks five to six feet in height, with long spikes of flowers in every conceivable shade of blue. They are very desirable for their own re- markable beauty and on account of the scarcity of other good flowers of this color.

In addition to the varieties named, we grow large numbers from seed obtained from our own selection and hybridizing, and some of the very finest specimens are obtained from this stock. During August these seedlings are in bloom and selection may be made in person is desired.

IRIS

The Iris is one of the finest, if not the finest, of our hardy plants. Not particular as to soil or location, but asking only that the sun shine on it, it throws up spikes of bloom that are marvelous in their delicacy of structure and the colorings which are exquisitely dainty are wonderful in their blendings and variety.

They are very effective planted in groups and if used for borders are particularly desirable in that the foliage remains fresh and upright after the blos- som stalks are removed.

Planted in late August or early September they flower very freely the first season.

PEONIES

No flower of our gardens is of such permanency as the Peony. With proper care and fertilization they bloom year after year. And as we learn to know them, we look forward to their coming as to a meeting with old friends.

As Peonies make practically all their new root growth in the fall, they should be planted in Septem- ber to obtain any results the following season, and no great number of flowers should be expected until the second or third year.

The propagation of this plant is slow and prices are never low for good varieties.

While there are many hundreds of good varieties differing slightly in color and habit, the following are some of the best, and will be a revelation to those who are not familiar with the choice originations of specialists.

GLADIOLI - DAHLIAS |

* n

u

The growing of Gladioli and Dahlias | is one of our specialties and during the | blooming season acres of these beautiful | flowers are a rare sight. As no flowers 1 are cut with long stems for the market, | the bulbs produced here are exception- | ally fine and well developed. These |

bulbs should not be compared with |

u

foreign grown stock, and if high quality | in Gladioli is desired, bulbs known to be | American grown should be insisted upon. g

n

u

In the finer Dahlias of the Cactus |

type, many varieties which bloom freely |

and satisfactorily near the coast are |

practically failures in the climate of the

middle west. In our continuous trials |

of new varieties we are obliged to

discard nearly all for this reason and |

grow for sale only those which give a |

satisfactory amount of bloom.

A descriptive price list of these bulbs | is issued separately.
