Prepared Holland Bulb Fiber

For Growing Bulbsf in Ornamental Bowls, Fancy Vases, Jardinieres, Deep Dishes and Other Vessels Without Bottom Drainage

A complete substitute for soil, and a most charming way of growing bulbs in the house for Winter blooming. Intensely interesting and entirely satisfactory.

The method of growing bulbs in fiber, while compara- tively new in our country, has been practised in Europe for years, and is, indeed, very popular there. It offers a great many advantage^ over the old way of using soil. The unsightly pot may be discarded and in its stead you can use artistic bowls or vases which will lend additional beauty to your plants. These bowls or vessels may be placed anywhere about the house without fear of any stain from water or soil.

Our fiber is scientifically prepared and will not sour. It contains abundant plant food to produce a most luxu- riant growth and finest flowers, is clean to handle and odorless.

The bulbs which grow particularly well in fiber are Roman Hyacinths, all Dutch Hyacinths, Paper White Narcissus, Polyanthus Narcissus, Daffodils, all Trumpet and Double varieties, Poetaz Narcissus, Chinese Lilies, Single and Double Tulips, such varieties as are recommended for forcing, J’reesias, Crocus, Scillas and Snowdrops. Xhe

fiber will be received in -a dry condition, and should first be thoroughly moistened. The bulbs are potted the same way as in ordinary soil, just showing their tops. It is not necessary or desirable to press the fiber tightly, other- wise the roots do not work freely, and bulbs have a ten- dency to push themselves upward. Once potted, they require hardly any attention, but great care should be taken to keep the composition moist; on no account, however, must it be sodden or too wet.

If once allowed to become dry, even for half a day only, the pores of the roots close up and the bulbs in many cases go blind and are ruined. This happens more frequently with Tulips than Narcissus, the Tulip roots being finer and therefore more hable to injury.

When the bulbs have been potted, vases or jars should be kept in a dark, airy cellar or room until they have grown about one inch, when they should be brought in the light, and the vases or bowls can be placed in the win- dow, taking care, of course, to keep them from frost.

GROWING BULBS IN WATER AND PEBBLES

Is another very fascinating method. Here, too, fancy bowls, glass or china dishes can be used. Fill the receptacles to very nearly the top with pebbles, then fill with water until it is on a level with them, press the bulbs gently into the pebbles so they stand erect; the roots will wind their way through them and secure a firm hold for the bulbs. Water must be added as it is taken up by the roots for nourishment.

GROWING HYACINTHS IN GLASSES

HYACINTHS. The single-flowering varieties can also be grown in water for which especially constructed glasses, known as Hyacinth Glasses (see illustration on second page of cover) should be used.

Culture. Single Hyacinths do better than Double in glasses, as they produce a much larger and more showy truss. Place the bulbs in the glasses, which should be filled with water so it touches the bottom of the bulbs; put them in a closed box in a cool place, or on a shelf in the dark part of the cellar, for from six to eight weeks, changing the water every ten days or two weeks ; then remove them to the light. If then placed in a cool room they will produce very fine spikes and remain in bloom a long time. A small piece of charcoal in .the water is beneficial.

Select List of Choicest Dcirwin Tulips

The Most Exquisite Race of All May-Flowering Tulips

A strong growing race of Tulips, with large, perfect, cup-shaped, brilliantly colored flowers, carried erect on long, stiff stems, averaging 2 feet in height. Wonderfully showy in beds orin clumps in the herbaceous border or among shrubs.

Grown for cut flowers they will prove very valuable at a time when the gardens yield so little to decorate our rooms. They flower during the middle part of May, when the Spring flowers are over and the Summer flowers, such as Peonies and Roses, have not yet come in. Their chief characteristics are the perfect cup-shape of the flowers and the blue, black or white coloring at the base of the petals inside of the flowers.

Another very characteristic quality of Darwins is that the color inside of the flower is just as bright as, and some- times even brighter than outside. This is why a Darwin remains beautiful, even when it is fully open or almost gone.

By slow forcing in pots, they may be had in bloom in March or even earlier. Most of the varieties improve in color by protection under glass or canvas. The list of varieties we offer is carefully selected and includes nothing but fine varieties. We have discarded a great many sorts which we considered inferior to those we now offer.

Culture Tulips can be planted out of doors any time between, say, the 15th of October and November 15th. They do best in a fairly stiff, well drained soil, but any good garden soil will grow them very well. Select, if possible, a warm, sunny and sheltered position, although they will grow well in almost any place except low, damp ground. The soil should be deeply dug, a little bone meal added and thoroughly mixed in. To have a brilliant effect, bulbs must be planted rather thickly; 6 inches apart for Darwin and Cottage Tulips, and 5 inches for the early-flowering varieties is about the right distance, and all of them should be set 5 inches deep to the bottom of the bulb. Tulips are very hardy and require no protection.

We deliver free in the United States all bulbs quoted at dozen and hundred rates if cash accompanies your order.

SINGLE EARLY TULIPS

Tulips are perhaps the most popular of all Spring-flowering bulbs, and are extensively used for forcing and bedding. For growing under glass the cultural directions given for Hyacinths, should be followed. For bedding they should be planted 5 to 6 inches apart and 5 inches deep to the bottom of the bulb.

The best time for planting is in October and until the ground freezes late in November.

TULIPS ARE READY FOR DELIVERY IN SEPTEMBER

Cultural Directions for Hyacinths

Planting in the Open Ground. October and November is the proper time, but they can be set out any time as long as the ground is open and the bulbs remain sound. The bulbs should be planted evenly about six inches deep (to the bottom of the bulbs), and from five to six inches apart; if planted at uneven depths they will not bloom at the same time, but irregularly.

First Size Single Named Hyacinths

Mammoth Bulbs for Pots, Bowls, Glasses, Etc.

The varieties quoted below are all extra selected, first size .bulbs, and cannot be excelled. They should always be selected for exhibition purposes, to ^ow singly in pots or glasses, and are equally superior for bedding, if the price can be afforded.

We specially recommend Single Hyacinths; they are preferable to double ones, as they produce larger spikes and force more easily.

The varieties prefixed by an asterisk (*) we recommend as the most valuable.

_ Directions for Culture in Pots. FiU the pots with a light, rich potting soil, and have the tops of the bulbs just above the surface; give a good watering and set away in a cool place, cover- ing them with about five inches of sand or coal ashes. In about eight weeks they may be taken to the room in which they are to flower. By bringing in a few pots at a time about two weeks apart, a succession of bloom may be had.

Glass Culture. Single Hyacinths do better than Double in glasses, as they produce a much larger and more showy truss. Place the bulbs in the glasses, which should be filled with water so it touches the bottom of the bulb; put them in a closed box in a cool place, or on a shelf in the dark part of the cellar, for from six to eight weeks, changing the water every ten days or two weeks; then remove them to the light. If then placed in a cool room they will produce very fine spikes and remain in bloom a long time. A small piece of charcoal in the water is beneficial.

Dutch Hyacinths Grown in France

Especially suitable for very early forcing. May be had in bloom early in December.

With especially careful culture these Hyacinths have even bloomed as early as Thanksgiving Day. This has been made possible by growing the bulbs of Dutch Hyacinths for one season in the south of France, in the same district where the Roman Hyacinths are grown. Owing to the more favorable climate there, the bulbs ripen off considerably earlier than in Holland and become thereby especially valuable for very early forcing. The following varieties respond most readily to this treatment and have given absolute satisfaction in every test.

Second Size Hyacinths

This grade of named Hyacinths is the best value offered in Hyacinths. Being of the same age as first size bulbs from which they are the second selection, many varieties will produce spikes nearly as large as the former, so that they are splendid for growing in pans or three in a pot. They will produce much better effects when grown in borders than unnamed Hyacinths, not only that the quality is so much better, but a single variety used for a certain shade of color is far more pleasing than a mixture, while the price difference is only slight.

We only list the varieties most in demand in second size, but shall be pleased to supply this size of any variety desired

Single Narcissi, or Daffodils

Narcissi, or Daffodils, next to Crocus and Snowdrops, the first flowers to cheer us in early Spring, are perhaps the most satis- factory of all Spring-flowering bulbs. There is no other flower that at all aspires to take their place or even to approach them in their season, for beauty or general utility. They are so cheap and so easily grown, bloom so early and keep fresh so long in water, that no garden, large or small, should be without a little patch of Daffodils. We especially recommend planting them in masses in the border, among shrubs and in the lawn. They are perfectly hardy and will last for years. Most varieties, especially the large Trumpet sorts, are much used for forcing in pots to bloom at Christmas and all through the Winter months. The culture given for Hyacinths applies also to Narcissus.

W. & D.’s

Selected Lily of the Valley Pips

(Ready for Delivery in November)

The Lily of the Valley is one of the most useful and greatly admired plants grown; the modest bell-shaped flowers of purest white are highly prized for cutting purposes, and for flowering in pots in the Winter they are exceedingly well adapted and will last several weeks in beauty. By taking them in at intervals a succession of flowers may be kept up aU Winter. For forcing the pips should always be used, being especially selected for that purpose; they are all extra heavy, 3-year-old crowns and every one can be rehed upon to produce at least one, and very often two, well-developed flower spikes. Plant in flats or pots (about twelve pips in a 6-in. pot) with all the fibrous roots carefully preserved, and keep the crowns above the soil. Place them in a tem- perature of about 80 degrees, cover the crowns with loose moss, and keep them constantly moist. They should flower in about five weeks.

502 W. & D.’s Extra Selected Strong Pips, Exhi-

bition Brand grade of Lily of the Valley we

recommend as the very best. The pips

are large and plump with plenty of fibrous roots, giving extra long spikes of bloom with from 12 to 15 large, well-developed bells and strong, healthy foliage. This grade has given excellent satisfaction wherever grown. Doz. 50c., Bundle of 25 $1.25. 100 $4.00, 1000 $38.00.

Hardy Lilies for Outside Planting

Lilies are matchless among hardy plants for beauty of form and variety of color in the garden. They commence flowering in May, and with the various species maintain a continuous and unbroken succession of bloom until Autumn. No class of plants, capable of being cultivated out of doors, possesses so many charms; their stately habit, rich and varied colored flowers, often dehciously fragrant, and easy culture, render them so distinct from all other hardy plants that no collection, however select, should be without a few of the choicer sorts.

Iris Hispanica (Spanish Iris)

The Spanish Irises flower two weeks before the English and differ from them considerably, the colors of the flowers being showier and more varied. The curious and charming blendings of shades in the same flower give them the appearance of many of our rare Orchids. For vases and, bouquets the cut flowers are greatly prized as they last long when cut and the buds open well in water. Excellent for forcing.

CROCUS. Hybrid Named

The Crocus is one of the first flowers of Spring. For garden culture plant bulbs two inches deep and two or three inches apart. as those of the regular hybrid named sorts.

SCILLA

Scillas, especially the Campanula varieties, are splendid for naturalizing, because they will flower in shady places where almost any other flower will die. As their cost is very rea- sonable, they are one of the most useful flowers for the land- scape architect, gardener or amateur. They have bells like small Hyacinths, forming long and graceful spikes.

SAUROMATUM GUTTATUM

1060 Guttatum (Monarch of the East). A remarkable flower, attracting immediate attention. The only treat- ment required is to simply place the large bulb on a table or shelf in a warm room or greenhouse, and within a few weeks a curiously formed flower from 16 to 18 inches long develops. Extra large bulbs. Each 25c., doz. $2.50.

BULBS Continued

WATSONIA ARDERNEI (OBrieni)

1070 ARDERNEI (O’Brieni). Highly recommendable for forcing. Bulbs ready October to November. A splendid bulbous plant of rare beauty and especially valuable for cutting; produces its pure white, tube-shaped flowers in great abundance on long, stiff stems. The flowers somewhat resemble those of the Freesia but are much larger and longer. When forced the spikes often attain a height of 4 to 4}^ feet, forming a straight center spike from which 3 to 4 lateral shoots branch off, all of which grow up erect and are thickly covered with flowers of the purest white. A vase of Wat- sonias is a rare attraction. Bulbs can be grown in pots or benches, but should be forced slowly, otherwise treat the same as Gladioli. For outdoor planting a sunny place, pro- tected from the north and west winds, should be selected. Strong selected bulbs. Doz. $1.75, 100 $12.00.

HERBACEOUS PEONIES

Are one of our specialties. The roots we send out are strong, fleld-grown clumps, true to name and if planted from Septem- ber 15 to November 1, will bloom the following Spring. If interested, write for Peony Catalogue, which we will be glad to mail.

THE NEW WINTER-BLOOMING GIANT PANSIES “WORLD-RECORD”

These new Pansies may be announced as an introduction of great importance. Sown at the same time as other Pansies, they begin to flower fully six weeks earlier; the cardinal feature of these plants, however, is their extreme hardiness, which enables them to stand our severest Winters and to bloom right into the Summer. Plants set out in beds in the Autumn will begin to flower outside in March about the time the Crocuses break through the j^ound. Moreover, the blooms are of the finest form and attain to a size and brilliancy of coloring such as we meet with only in the foremost productions of Giant Pansies of the day. A special , feature is also the delicate

Pansy perfume being developed in a marked degree. Excel-

lent for Winter forcing.
