McGregor’s Fall Catalogue

The Original Boston Fern, Nephrolepis Bos- toniensis. Its freedom of growth without essential care has made it popular with admirers of beauti- ful house plants. 20c, 35c, 60c.

The Grand New Dwarf Fern

“Teddy Jr.”

This magnif- f* ri icent Fern is a W I I sprout fromthe now famous Roosevelt Fern, and while it produces a shorter frond it retains all the valuable characteristics of the parent. Fronds are broad and beautifully tapered from base to tip ; they droop just enough to make a shapely, graceful plant, permit- ting it to finish with fine full center and perfect symmetrical spread. The pinnae are distinctly un- dulated, giving the fronds an attractive wavy ap- pearance, which adds to

their charming decorative effect. It is such a compact, vigorous grower that it will thrive under most adverse conditions. Young plants, 20c; strong plants, 35c; extra strong plants, 60c.

THE PLUMED FERN.

Scholzeli

With the recent introductions of Ferns which have come from the original Boston type, there is no variety with heavier and more plumy fronds than Scholzeli. Its foliage is nuite different from all other varieties of the family, and stands in a class by itself. The plant makes a comparatively dwarf compact growth, theTronds, while dense, firm and rigid, are still graceful as the illustration shows. The foliage is also of a darker green than the original Boston Fern. All in all, it forms an ideal plumed Fern, possessing all the merits of former introductions while having a distinctive character that makes it of especial value. Price, nice shapely plants, 20c; larger size, 35c and 60c.

Boston Fern

“No Single Decorative Plant has ever proven more popular.”

This Fern is one of the best known W 1 1 varieties grown, and in the long years of its cultivation has proven worthy of a place in every home. Called the Fountain Fern, for its exceptionally graceful habit of growth, and until the introduction of other types was considered the most valuable house plant to be had.

It is of easy culture and a very rapid grower, producing fronds of unusual length, fre- quently measuring six to eight feet in length. Its unusual freedom of growth without es- pecial care has made it pop- ular with all admirers of house plants, and although there have been many new intro- ductions from this the parent plant, it is still the most pop- ular variety in cultivation. Price, nice young plants, 20c each; larger plants, 35c and 60c each.

The Best All-Round Plant Grown

THE IDEAL FERN

ROOSEVELT

A Notable and Valuable Novelty.

Wins Prizes Everywhere.

The popular Boston A/\ Fern has had the most phenomenal sale of any decorative plant grown. Fronds broad and heavy, often measuring ,6 in. or more across, and five or six feet long. Owing to the weight of the foli- age, the plant assumes an ex- ceedingly massive yet graceful appearance, and owing to the fullness of the fronds even small plants make much more sym- metrical and beautiful plants than the popular Boston Fern. The divided pinnae or minia- ture fronds which are so grace- fully arranged, keep growing constantly, overlapping each other and showing two shades of green, while the center and main part of the frond is rich dark green, the contrast pro- ducing a beautiful effect.

We offer well established plants at 20c each ; 3 for 50c, postpaid; strong plants, 35c each; 3 for 80c, postpaid; larger plants, 50c each; 3 for $1.30.

The Gold Medal Fern

Elegantissima Compacta.

Valuable on Account of Its Easy Culture.

A variety of comparatively re- ^ cent introduction which is differ- ent and distinct in compactness of 1 Tyl growth and the subdivision of its fronds. While fronds are broad and heavy, plants have a graceful appearance. Won- derfully valuable on account of its easy culture and hardiness. Its distinguishing characteristics are its dark green foliage, its dense and compact growth and its ir- regular shaped fronds, which are heavily imbricated, the pinnae overlapping and so formed as to resemble miniature ferns. Price, well established plants, 19c each; 3 for 49c, postpaid; strong plants, 29c each; 3 for 78c, postpaid; extra strong plants, 49c each; 3 for $1.24.

Whitmanii is one of the few feathery foliageFerns which every one can suc- ceed in growing. It is a healthy, vigorous grower, constantly unfolding fresh fronds, which often attain a width of twelve inches. Each frond is delipately and finely cut, possessing such elegance of form and willowy grace as to be compared to a beautiful ostrich plume. Its feathery, drooping form and compact, luxuriant growth will make the most sordid surroundings assume cheerfulness and verdant beauty. In decorative effect it far outdistances many of the other va- rieties of the family. It has taken gold medals wherever shown. Price, young plants, 20c; 3 for 50c; strong plants, 35c; extra strong plants, 50c.

Asparagus Sprengerii (Trailing Basket Fern), Sprays three to four feet long. 20c, 35c.

Asparagus Plumosus (Lace Fern) Foliage of richest green. 20c, 35c.

Feather Fern

Unsurpassed for Window Boxes or Hanging Baskets.

Foliage Graceful and Drooping Dense Glossy Green.

(Asparagus Sprenrerii) The As- paragus Sprengerii gives us a plant of the bushy and drooping form of the Asparagus family. The foliage is composed of dense, glossy green, graceful and drooping branches. The Feather Fern or Asparagus Spreng- erii is probably of a hardier nature than the Plumosus, and subjects it- self to wider usage. It is especially valuable for window box and hang- ing' basket planting, for vases and as specimens when grown in pots or as tub plants. The Feather Fern or Asparagus Sprengerii gives us a more valuable house plant, being one of easy culture, the sprays

growing four to five feet long, and when the foliage is used for cut flower work it retains its freshness for an unusual length of time. The Feather Fern is particularly free

from troublesome insects or diseases, and in this has one advantage over the large family of decorative Ferns of the Boston Fern type. The plants are of rapid growth, succeeding well in ordinary rich soil, and there is every reason to believe that all plant growers can have the greatest suc- cess with them. Price, nice strong

growing young plants, 20c each;

3 for 50c; $1.50 per dozen. Strong plants, 35c each ; 3 for 95c.

Decorative Plants

J. K., Brooklyn, III.: “The Ferns you sent me are surely beauties and are doing very fine.”

Lace Fern

One of Most Beautiful and Popular Foliage Plants of the Century.

A Decorative Plant of Unusual Value.

(Asparagus Plumosus) The family of Asparagus plants comprises a number of varieties. Some are climbers, some droop- ing or trailing, some erect and bushy. Many of them are highly prized for their beauti- ful and graceful foliage, and the two varie- ties which we list on this page are prac- tically the most popular and valuable of all. The variety Plumosus (Asparagus Plumosus Nanus) is a tall, climbing, decorative plant and one of the rarest and of delicate beauty. Its bright green foliage is ex- tremely fine and plume-like. The fronds grow from six to eight inches in width and when cut retain their color and shape for weeks. The plant may be grown as a pot plant, a bushy form or climbing. Florists grow the Asparagus Plumosus to give them rich green strings of foliage to be used sim- ilar to the popular Smilax. Asparagus possesses the advantage of being more graceful and its foliage finer than those of the most delicate Fern. As a house plant it will thrive under practically all condi- tions. The Asparagus likes a good rich soil and fairly warm temperature. The plant does best and carries the richest color of foliage when it is kept in a growing con- dition through a plentiful supply of nour- ishment. Asparagus is comparatively free from diseases, and wTith all its good qual- ities and practically no bad ones, it ranks as one of the first decorative plants to be had. Nice young strong growing plants, 20c each; 3 for 50c. Larger plants 35c; 3 for 85c.

Choice Hardy Flowering Shrubs

The planting of shrubs is an important feature in the adornment of any grounds. They may be planted indi- vidually or collectively, and but few of them are really required to add to the beauty and value of property, and at the same time contribute to the pleasure and in- terest of the home. Probably the most effective ar- rangement of shrubs is irregular groups or arranged against buildings, fences or property lines or as plant- ing along walks or drives. Our collection is a practical one and the plants we offer are healthy and vigorous.

Hydrangea Arborescens

Grandiflora Alba (Hills of Snow) (Four to eight feet.) This beautiful hardy American shrub is the finest addition to this class of plants found in many years. The blooms are very large, of pure snow-white color, resembling a little the hardy so well known, the Snowball, in color and make-up, only they are much larger in size and much more striking. One of its most valuable features is its coming into bloom just after the passing of all the early spring shrubs, while its long season of bloom, from early in June through August, renders it a valuable plant not only to the florist, but to the owner of every garden. It is perfectly hardy, standing twenty degrees below zero. By express, 15c each; 3 for 40c; $1.50 per dozen. Strong plants, 25c each; 3 for 60c; $2.40 per dozen. THE SENSATIONAL DECIDUOUS SHRUB, BUDDLEYA VARIABILIS MAGNIFICA.

Ever-Blooming Butterfly Bush

(Summer Lilac) Free flowering. Blooms all summer. The Buddleya or Everblooming Butter - ily Bush was one of the show plants of the San Francisco and San Diego expositions. It attracted unusual attention and was greatly admired by thousands. The Buddleya is a deciduous bush, dying down in the winter. In the spring the top should be cut off quite close to the ground. The blooms come from the new wood produced through the summer. Buddleya is one of the most valu- able plants either for border or specimen plant- ing, blooming as it does late in the season, and continuing in bloom from the latter part of June until nipped by frost.

It is very rapid growing, and two years will make a large spreading bush, four to six feet high. It produces long, graceful stems which terminate in tapering panicles of beautiful lilac- colored flowers that are of miniature size and borne by the hundreds on a flower head which is frequently ten inches long. A single plant the first season will throw out as many as fifty flower spikes, which increase greatly in number during succeeding years. We recommend covering the roots with manure, leaves or other suitable material as winter approaches. Price, good strong plants 25c each; 3 for 60c; postpaid; by express. 20c each ; 3 for 50c.
