We invite an inspection of stock at all times, and upon notice by phone from Portland — Main 9158 — will be pleased to meet parties and show them over our grounds. From Portland the nursery may be reached via auto over the Canyon Road six miles from the center of the city. The nursery is owned by Howard Evarts Weed, for many years a Landscape Architect of Chicago. The location was selected after ten years' investigation to find the ideal com- bination of soil and climatic conditions suit- able for the growth of ornamental plants. A cordial invitation is extended to visitors at all times to inspect the wonderful variety of ornamental plants which we grow. We have the most extensive collection of Peonies in the west and the largest selection of Iris in the Northwest. Those who have not seen our collections of these two flowers can little realize their beauty. The Iris are at their best during the month of May and the Peonies during the first three weeks of June. Phloxes and other perennials make a fine showing later in the season, so one will be amply repaid for the time expended in a visit to the nursery at any season. We specialize in landscape gardening. If you contemplate the planting of ornamental plants on your home grounds, Mr. Weed will be pleased to inspect your grounds and give an estimate of the cost of any improvements. Our general catalogue of ornamental plants will be sent unon request. Address communications to THE WEED LANDSCAPE NURSERY Beaverton, Oregon 2 IRIS The Iris is a flow- er now coming into great popularity. It is a far cry from the “Flags” of the old gardens to the lovely creations of the hybridists, with their graceful and elegant forms and rich colors. A visit to a modem Iris garden is a revela- tion to most people, even to the flower lovers. The Iris is the “Fleur de Lis” of France — the Na- tional Flower. In America we often call it “the poor man’s orchid,” be- cause of its delicate nature and rich coloring. The flowers are beautiful in form and wonderful in Pallida dalmatica Structure. In COl— ors we have royal purple and gold, all shades of blue from deli- cate azure to deepest violet, cream and snowy- white, violet so dark as to be almost black, shades of fawn and brown, copper and bronze, crimson and rose, ruffled, bordered, penciled and splashed in marvelous designs. Here on the Pacific Coast one can have Iris from December to July in continuous bloom. Most of them are of easy culture, requiring no special care either in planting, soil, or situation. They will stand more neg- lect than any other flower and can be planted at any season, altho the autumn months are best. They do best in sunshine and well drained soil. If given plenty of water be- 3 fore the flowering season, they will flower more perfectly, but after the flowers are gone it is best to keep the water from them in order that they may have a resting stage when growth is practically dormant. Iris, like other flowers, are best selected when in bloom. But where this is not pos- sible, and the selection be left to us, we will give particular attention to giving varieties to cover the longest season of bloom. The prices given herein are for so-called single crowns, but in most cases there are two or three strong crowns connected. Six plants of a variety are given for the price of five. In describing an Iris, the upright petals are termed the “standards” and the bottom drooping petals are known as the “falls.” This is further shortened in the description by the letter S. for standards and F. for falls. THE WINTER BLOOMING IRIS These remarkable Iris belong to the genus Unguicularis and are winter bloomers, the flowers often showing above an inch or more of snow. The plants have long grass foliage and are the most continuous bloom- ers of any Iris — the “cut and come again sort.” With us they begin blooming in December and con- tinue to bloom until April, there being always bloom on the plants during this time. Flowering at such an unusual sea- son they should be included in every collection.
