HYACINTHS

(Ready September 15th)

The Hyacinth is one of the most beautiful, as well as the most fragrant of the winter and early spring flowering hardy bulbs. For house culture in the winter there is nothing in cultivation more beautiful, and for the garden in early spring they deservedly stand foremost in the list of all spring flowering bulbs. They are also adapted for growing in water in the house.

INDOOR CULTURE The bulbs can be planted from Septem- ber to December in a compost made up of one-third each good garden loam, leaf soil and sand mixed together. The bulbs may be planted in pots, bulb pans and window boxes. After thor- oughly watering the bulbs should be put in a dark, cool place for six to eight weeks so as to become rooted. At the end of that time it will be found that top growth has begun and when about one inch high may be brought gradually to the light.

OUTDOOR CULTURE Plant bulbs any time from October until the ground is frozen solid. Set the bulbs so that their tops are three or four inches below the surface and six to ten inches apart, in any good, well-drained garden soil. A slight covering with straw, leaves or ashes is advisable to protect the bulbs during the winter. Do not cover until the ground is frozen. Remove the covering in early spring, when severe freezing is over.

GLASS CULTURE Colored glasses are best. Fill glasses with water, until the base of each bulb rests on the water, and set away in the dark as directed above for pot culture. As fast as the water in the glasses evaporates replenish, and if the water becomes impure, change it, cleansing the roots well. A small piece of charcoal in the glass will keep the water pure for a long time. When there is a good growth of roots, bring the glass to the light and keep in a cool room near a window, but not in a close, warm room or near a fireplace. Keep the glasses sufficiently filled with water.

PERFECTION BULBS AND SEEDS FOR AUTUMN PLANTING

FRENCH ROMAN HYACINTHS

A charming and distinct class of hyacinths, extensively grown by florists for winter cut flowers. They force readily in the house, but are not recommended for outdoor planting. Each bulb gives three or four graceful flower spikes, and by successive plantings they can be had in flower from November to March. The delightfully fragrant flowers are more slender and somewhat smaller than the ordinary hyacinth, but are considerably earlier. The best effect is produced

by planting four or five bulbs in a medium-sized pot.

Weight: 2 lbs. per doz. ; 10 lbs. per 100 (packed weight). Pure White, extra large size

PREPARED BULB FIBRE

The best and most charming way of growing spring bulbs for house and table decoration.

Tulips Grown in Fibre

This material contains all the food for the growing of bulbous plants. It is clean and odorless, and with the addition of a few small pieces of charcoal bulbs can be grown in dishes without any drainage. Plant the bulbs as in soil, first thoroughly moistening the fibre and after planting re- move all surplus water from the dishes by placing it on its side.

The bulbs require the same treatment as if planted in soil. Mailing weight, 4 lbs. per peck, 75c. per peck; $2.50 per bushel. If wanted by Parcel Post, add postage.

SINGLE EARLY TULIPS

(Ready Sept. 15th)

It is difficult to conceive of anything more brilliant i n color than a bed of tulips. Their great variety of color, intense brilliancy and beautiful shading make them universal favorites. Another consideration in their favor is the ease with which they can be cultivated, only requiring good, common garden soil to grow them to perfection. There are no other bulbs which make such a rich and gorgeous display of blossom with so little care and cultivation as tulips.

The Dutch growers have so mastered the art of tulip culture that they are now able to offer bulbs at prices which bring them within the reach of all, and of a quality which leaves nothing more to be desired. The tulips we offer are among the most perfect of flowers in form, wealth of color and variety of markings.

The culture of tulips out of doors is the same as that of hyacinths, except that the bulbs should be planted about three inches deep and three to six inches apart. Tulips are perfectly hardy, so that only a slight protection is required from extremely cold and sharp winds.

Many of the single varieties force readily and have become great favorites in the house in mid- winter. If potted in September and treated as directed for hyacinths, they may be had in bloom in December. Three bulbs in a four-inch pot have been found desirable. When they show a tendency to bloom just above the bulbs they must be kept longer in the dark to draw out the flower stems. A splendid effect is obtained by planting from three to a dozen bulbs in a medium-sized pot.

All single early varieties commence flowering two weeks in advance of other sorts of tulips and are admirably adapted to culture in pots, borders or beds.

By Parcel Post add postage at zone rates. See inside cover. Special prices for larger quantities.

Weight: 1 lb. per dozen; 8 lbs. per 100 (packed weight).

GIANT SPRING FLOWERING CROCUS

Among the earliest to blossom in spring is the eautiful little flower, lifting its head almost bs- Dre the snow has disappeared. The showy fun- el-shaped flowers borne above the grass-like laves are most welcome visitors in the early pring sunshine.

Although most showy when massed in large leds, or when planted in lines of distinct colors, very desirable effect is produced by setting .'rocuses here and there over the lawn. It is mly necessary to lift the turf and insert the »ulbs aboul; two inches deep.

Crocuses will care for themselves, blooming '■ery early amid the grass and dying down to he bulb in ample time to be entirely out of the vay of the lawn mower. The crocus should be )lanted in the autumn, in any good garden soil, ibout three inches deep and about two inches ipart, if in beds or borders.

Indoors the crocus can be easily forced if growth is maintained at a low temperature. Use he named sorts and plant from six to a dozen >ulbs one inch deep in a pot of ordinary soil, ceep cool, well watered, gradually bring to full ight and give plenty of fresh air. The crocus nay also be flowered in small glasses.

The Oriental ,1 coloring of the flowers in their rich reds and yellows is very effective. They are easily grown and last long as cut flowers. Not hardy in the Northern States. Should be wintered in cold frames. j

Simon’s Perfection Lawn Grass represents what the name implies, a “Perfect Lawn.” It is made up of an intelli- gently arranged combination of eleven fine-leaved dwarf grasses, which are at their best during different months of the year, thus insuring a carpet of deep velvety green so much desired by lovers of good lawns.

One quart is sufficient for a space 15 by 15 feet or five bushels per acre for new lawns, or half that quantity for renovating old lawns. In the latitude of Philadelphia, seed may be sown any time from April to June, also during the early fall months (September being the best. Price 1 pt., 15c.; 1 qt., 25c.; 4 qts., 75c.; pk., $1.35; bus. (20 lbs.), $5.00

Fail-mount Park Lawn Seed A good mixture of grasses that is less expensive than our Perfection mixture. 1 pt., 10c.; 1 qt., 20c.; 4 qts., 60c.; pk., $1.10; bus. (18 lbs.), $4.00

Shady Nook Lawn Grass Seed On many lawns are bare spots under shade trees. Such spots are frequently sour, perhaps covered with a green scum or moss. In such cases apply hydrated lime, which is powdered fine, at the rate of one bushel per thousand square feet, removing all moss or scum first and then loosening the soil in same manner as already prescribed for regular lawn making. Our mix- ture of grass seed for shaded spots is one best adapted to the requirements of much shaded lawns and will grow per- fectly where ordinary grass mixture would fail. Sowing instructions same as for Perfection Lawn Grass Seed. Lb., 50c.; 10 lbs., $4.00; bus. (16 lbs.), $6.40; 100 lbs., $38.00

Our Lawn Grass Seeds are too well known to require any further detailed description, except to say that many of the finest lawns and parks of this city and nearby towns were seeded down with our Perfection Lawn Grass Seed.

The heads are long and well filled and it is an unusually heavy yielder. The Rosen is a distinct improvement over com- mon rye and should be more largely grown. Sow 1 ^ bushels per acre. Per bu. By keeping this selection up for 1 0 years or more a very fine “Pedi- gree’ strain was obtained. It has uniformly long heads, large, light colored grain, and tall, stiff straw. Yields of 45 bushels per acre are quite common where this strain is used. The heads are long with smooth (beardless) brown chaff. The grain is white or light amber, medium long, medium hard and of fine milling quality. The straw is tall, very stiff and stands up well. It is very hardy and will succeed where other white wheats winter kill.
