John H. McKibbln

The city in which I li\'e and do business is known as the Gladioli City.”

It well deserves the name for more gladioli and finer ones are originated in this vicinity than in any other spot in America and perhaps in the world. Of all the various strains of gladioli, the Knnderd is by far the best. I am making a specialty of this particular strain and am confident that none more vigorous nor more beautiful can be had.

In my list yon will find three varieties of my own origin, Highland Laddie”, ^ Gold Pheasant” and Carmen”. The latter two being listed for the first time.

The short description given does not do them justice, they must be seen to be appreciated.

I wish to thank all my old customers for their liberal patronage in the past and shall use my utmost endeavor to merit their patronage in the future.

I also wish to say that I shall welcome any new customers and give them as courteous and liberal treatment as can possibly be given.

Gladiolus Dorothy McKibbin

Originated by A. E. Kiuid- erd, Goshen, Indiana. I pnr- eliased the entire stock of this variety of Mr. Kunderd in 1011. It was named after my danghter Dorothy in 1918, and was introduced to the trade during the season of 1918-1919.

Dorothy McKibbin has been tested by florists and pronounced first class for forcing purposes, has long, straight, wiry stems, the flowers growing well out of the foliage; extremely early, elegantly ruffled and of a most beautiful shade of pink; has a pure apple blossom tinted throat, blending to bright pink around the outer edges of the petals. It has a wide open flower with many open at a time.

Planting, Culture and Storage

For early flowering, plant the later part of April or as soon as the ground is ready for early garden making and all danger of freezing weather is past.

If continuation of the blooming season is desired, plant at intervals of about two weeks up until the middle or later part of June.

The ground should have a good covering of manure late in the fall preceding the planting to fallow. At the planting time only well rotted manure should be used. After planting, a high grade potato fertilizer or a top dressing of flne, well rotted manure can be used with very good results.

The ground should be plowed or spaded from ten to twelve inches deep, Avell pulverized and packed before planting. Do not work ground when too wet.

If after planting a crust should form before the plants get through the ground, this should be broken by using a garden rake or wheel hoe, being careful not to break the new shoots.

Cultivate often, keeping the soil loose and level and not allowing crust to form around the plants. AVhen flower spikes begin to show do not cultivate too deep, not more than two inches.

To produce full sized bulbs for the following year, four or five leaves should be left on the plant when cutting the spikes. In extreme hot weather spikes should be cut in the morning, just as the first flowers open and left to bloom in the house.

Bulbs should be dug in the fall before they get too ripe. Cut the tops off close to the bulb, dry in the air and sunshine, then store in a cool dry cellar. Keep as near forty degrees as possible.
