New Flowers and Vegetables for 1923

The Blue Lace Flower, Dediscus Coeruleus, Annual

It is extensively grown by cut flower growers in most large cities now to supply the fashionable cut flower trade. The plants grow about 2 feet high, producing graceful foliage and the flowers are perfectly lovely, a clear heavenly blue, a very rare and beautiful shade. Sow the seed outdoors after the danger of frost and it will produce plants that should bloom continuously from July to October. It also makes a lovely pot plant. Pkt., 15c; 2 pkts. for 25c.

HOW TO PLANT PANSY SEED

The seed may be planted in the hot bed, in boxes in the house or planted In the garden; same way as you would plant cabbage or tomato. The seed should be planted very shallow. Plants from seed sown in the spring will bloom that summer, but fall sown seed, slightly protected during the winter, will produce an abundance of flowers the following spring.

Pansy plants grow and bloom best in places partly shaded, in .sunny., places, they should be kept cultivated and watered. During hot weather the flowers will riot^be as large as in spring or fall. Keep the seed pods pic^d off, as they weaken the plants. When the flowers get small, cut back the long stems to withirr’two inches of the ground, cul- tivate and water thoroughly and soon you will have large beautiful blossoms.

During October or . November plants snonld cut back and after the. ground has frozen, mulch an inch deep with dry strdw.

CELERY

A healthful and toothsome vegetable. To the taste it is deliciously fresh, crisp and nutty. Phy- sicians say it is of great benefit in diseases of the nerves and kidneys.

Sow early in the house or hot-bed and trans- plant, or sow out doors when the ground becomes warm, making the soil smooth. Rolling or pressing In the seed has been found more satisfactory than covering. Cut the tops off once or twice before planting out, to make them stocky. When the plants are five or six inches high transplant, giv- ing six inches between plants in the row. The soil should be firm and rich, plant in trenches and as the plants grow, draw the earth closely around them, to blanch the stems. Don’t do this In wet weather or the stems will rust.

In regard to winter varieties. When cold weather sets in, dig a trench in a high well drained place, one foot wide and of a depth a few Inches less than the height of the Celery, then set youi plants close in it and cover tops gradually witt straw or hay, and earth, as the weather gets colder
