nansKa

The Hanska has been known to bear heavy crops when native plums most a total failure. Begins to bear at two years. Very small pit. Exceedingly hardy and vigorous.

Originated by Prof. N. E. Hanson, Professor of Horticulture in the South Dakota College of Agriculture, and Agricultural Explorer for the United States Department of Agriculture.

The female parent is a seedling of our wild Northwestern plum (Prunus Americana) ; the male parent is the large, firm-fleshed, fra- grant, apricot-plum of China (Prunus Simoni), popular in the orchards of Cali- fornia.

Hanska is Sioux Indian for “tall,” alluding to the extremely rapid growth in nursery and orchard. Three-year-old trees attain a height of twelve feet. First introduced in the spring of 1908.

The fruit of this variety is much admired for its beautiful color, which is bright red, with heavy blue bloom, firm yellow flesh,* good quality and rich fragrance. The fruit is one and one-half inches to one and nine-sixteenths inches in diameter, often larger. When cooked, the apricot flavor is brought out to perfection, entirely unlike any native plum. The flat shape also distinguishes it from all the other hardy plums in the Northwest.

The Suelter and Dakota grapes are the hardiest grapes that were ever pro- duced. Bath are profuse annual bearers of good large bunches and berries. Have had berries on Suelter as large as those of the Concord.

There are' no grapes in existence that are as hardy, and good in quality as the Suelter and Dakota, and we guarantee them both in every respect.

The Pioneer Nursery Co. is the only distributor of these grapes.

COMPASS CHERRY.

This is a cross between a Rocky Mountain or Western Sand Cherry and Miner Plum. Bears early and abundantly. Nearly black when fully ripe.

Pine for eating out of hand and unsurpassed for canning. V

HANSEN PLUMS AND PLUM-LIKE FRUITS.

New fruits, originated by Prof. N. E. Hansen at the Brookings, S. D., Ex- periment station. The Pioneer Nursery Co. grows them all. A few of them are Waneta, Hanska, Opata, Sapa, Cheresoto, i Toga, Wachampa ^and others. PERFECTLY HARDY, and all are profuse bearers of good fruits. The Waneta is the best of the plums. The Wachampa takes the place of a cherry. These plum-like fruits have been a surprise wherever planted. We have fruited them for a number of years.

EMERALD PLUM.

This plum is the best we have fruited on our grounds in the last ten years and it deserves to be better known. Tree a good strong grower and hardy. Fruit very large with a peach-like flavor. Bears annually.

“LORING PRIZE’’ PLUM.

In 1919 we will have a limited number of this new introduction.

FALL BEARING OR EVER BEARING STRAWBERRIES.

These are wonders and have come to stay. We have tested them since three years and now recommend them very highly to every one who has a small or large piece of ground to put them on. We had them from August to the end of October, and on October 22d made our last large picking. It is wonderful how they continue to ripen up even after repeated frosts.

Planting them in spring they will bear a fall crop. The following season they will bear a spring and fall crop. THREE crops in TWO seasons. The best varieties are : Progressive, Superb and Productive.
