QUALITY IN PLANTS

We offer in this circular a line of High Grade Vegetable Plants for early setting that we guarantee to give satisfaction. The business of growing and shipping vegetable plants has developed tremendously in the past 20 years. Hundreds of millions of plants are shipped annually to truckers, market gardeners and home gardeners, who find it more profitable to buy plants than to attempt to grow them.

Suitable Climate Necessary. Every year millions of plants are shipped from along the Gulf Coast and South Texas, where the winter climate is mild, that are not well hardened, and are not suitable for early setting. In the middle South the climate is adapted to growing plants in the open, which are hardy enough to set in the open farther north. Our farms are located where there is enough cold weather to grow REAL FROST PROOF PLANTS.

Selected Plants. Our plants are grown from high grade seed, and will be found true to type and variety. We ship you the kind you order. We send out plants that are large enough to transplant. No small, inferior, second hand plants shipped. Full count guaranteed.

Packing and Shipping. Our plants are carefully packed in light wooden crates, which are strong enough to stand rough handling. Plants are tied in bunches of 50, the tops are ventilated, and the roots are pro¬ tected from exposure to the air. We guarantee to deliver plants any¬ where in the United States.

Our Guarantee. We Guarantee Satisfaction. Occasionally shipments go wrong, are lost or delayed. If there is anything wrong with your order, pick out what you can use and notify us of the shortage at once. We expect to give you what you pay for.

Frost-Proof Cabbage Plants

The market gardener who grows cabbage for early market or ship¬ ment knows how important it is to get cabbage on the market early, if large profits are to be realized. The home gardener also wants some very early cabbage, and wants to avoid the trouble and expense of grow¬ ing plants in hotbeds. The best solution of this problem is THE FROST PROOF CABBAGE PLANT.

In South Georgia and parts of South Carolina the soil and climate are especially adapted to the growing of hard, tough cabbage plants during the fall and winter. The plants make a slow growth during the early part of the winter, and soon become very tough and hardy. When very cold weather comes, the plants are dormant, the leaves are of a reddish purple color, and the plants may be shipped to territory with a colder climate. The plants will stand a temperature of 20 degrees above zero without injury, and may be set in the open field four weeks before hot¬ bed plants. The top of the plant does not grow until warm weather comes, but the root becomes established, enabling the plant to make a rapid start, and mature headed cabbage two or three weeks earlier.

VARIETIES Early Jersey Wakefield

Charleston Wakefield, Second Early

Many market gardeners consider this the very best cabbage in cul¬ tivation for early market, and is more largely grown than any oth¬ er early cabbage. Its merits are many, among which are uniform¬ ity in earliness and crop. The head is pointed in shape, of me¬ dium size, and is white, solid and tender. It is beyond question the best variety for early market and always brings a good price on ac¬ count of its earliness, thereby net¬ ting the grower larger returns. Our strain of this variety is of the very best.

Charleston Wakefield

This is a selection of the Early Jersey Wakefield but makes a much larger head, and a week to ten days later. It stands pre¬ eminent as the best spring cab¬ bage for the South. It is probably more largely planted for shipment than any other variety. The heads are of uniform size, and maturity, and of very large size for an early cabbage. A strong favorite with Southern growers as a main crop.

Copenhagen Market

This is the very earliest of the round headed varieties. Its chief features besides earliness are re¬ markable size, averaging 10 pounds, compactness, even ma¬ turity, fine quality. Maturing at about the same time as the Early Jersey Wakefield, it produces larg¬ er heads than any other cabbage equally as early. The heads are heavy in weight, ball shaped, solid and firm, with a small core, fine texture, and splendid quality.

Golden Acre

A selection of the Copenhagen Market with heads a little smaller but matures earlier. Earliest of the round head varieties. A splen¬ did new variety becoming very popular. Plants of this variety not ready until March 15.

Earliest Roundhead

Succession

One of the earliest of the flat- head varieties. It is a second early variety coming in imme¬ diately after early varieties. A sure header and a very hardy grower, both in cold and hot weather. The heads become solid long before they are fully grown, so that though imma¬ ture, heads of satisfactory size may be cut long before it is at its best. A splendid kind for winter heading, in addition to the main crop. Heads are of uniform shape not too flat and very solid.

Frost-Proof Onion Plants

Southern grown onion plants are no longer an ex¬ periment. Large quantities are set out every year, and they are rapidly displacing sets. They will grow large, sweet onions early, and are good keepers. They produce onions two to three times larger than sets, and seldom run to seed. They can be set early, the same time you would put out sets or cabbage plants. Therefore we strong¬ ly advise you to use our plants instead of sets, whether for the market or home use. Our onion plants are grown from the very best seed, and will be found true to name.

Early Flat Dutch

This variety needs no rec¬ ommendation, because it is one of the largest in cultivation, the heads are very solid, distinctly flat¬ tened on top and of ex¬ cellent quality. It invaria¬ bly forms very large and at the same time very hard heads, uniform in size and shape. It has a very short stem, and is a very compact grower, forming few loose leaves. This variety is considered as the standard very large late cabbage for home garden and market.

Early Tomato Plants

Our early tomato plants like the cabbage plants are field grown, but they are not frost¬ proof, as it is impossible to grow a frostproof tomato plant.

However, they are not tender seedlings like you get from a gTeenhouse. They are suitable for setting in the open after danger of frost is over, unless you are prepared to protect them. They are strong and thrifty, and will give you to¬ matoes earlier than hot house plants. We use special care in packing these plants, each bunch being wrapped in damp moss and waxed paper. We can ship tomato plants any time you want them between March 20th, and June 1st.

VARIETIES

Earliana. The Earliana is probably the earliest tomato grown, and is very popular for early market. The fruit is deep scarlet, medium to large in size, and smooth for an early tomato.

Bonny Best. a fine variety for early market and home garden. Vines are vigorous and fruit bright scarlet in color, and uniform in ripening.

New Stone. Fine for main crop and deservedly one of the most popular tomatoes for canning and home market. Fruit is deep scarlet, large size and a heavy yielder.

Greater Baltimore, a mid season variety, very popular for main crop and canning. Probably more of this variety used by large canners than any other variety. Very dependable, producing extra heavy crop of large firm tomatoes.

Pepper and Egg Plants

Our Pepper and Egg Plants are suitable for setting in the open after danger of frost is over. Good plants carefully packed. Plants ready April 1 to June 1.

Egg Plant: Black Beauty; New York Improved Purple.

Our Potato Plants are grown from selected seed stock grown on our own farms. They are treated for all kinds of disease, and are government in¬ spected. Our customers are therefore protected from the many kinds of po¬ tato plant diseases which are becom¬ ing so prevalent throughout the South.

All potato plant orders are booked and shipped in the order in which they are received. We advise you to place your order early, stating when you want them shipped. We advise you to have potato plants shipped by express.

Lettuce Plants

While not quite so hardy as cabbage and onion plants, they will stand considerable frost and cold weather. They will produce a crop much earlier than seed. Set out at about the same time as cabbage.

Suggestions to Customers

Name, Address, etc. We wish to impress upon you the impor¬ tance of writing your name and full address plainly. If your express of¬ fice is different from your post office be sure to give it. We receive orders every year with faulty addresses, which cause unnecessary delay.

Remittances. You can send money safely by P. O. order, express order, bank draft, or check, and registered letter. Do not send stamps.

Ordering Different Varieties of Plants, we do not ship less than 100 plants of any variety. If you order cabbage, onion, tomato plants, etc., at the same time, make your remittance to cover the quan¬ tity of each kind of plants you order at prices quoted. If you wish to make your order in advance for tomato, potato, pepper and egg plants, at the same time you are ordering cabbage and onion plants, you may do so by giving' the date you wish the order shipped. By making one order this will be a saving to you.

Care of Plants. As soon as your plants come, take them out of the crates and set them out. If not ready to set, trench them out. If your plants look yellow and dead, do not jump to the conclusion that they are worthless. FROST PROOF cabbage plants always look brown and tough, and may look yellow after long shipment. Proper care and attention will bring them out, and they will make better cabbage than green, sappy plants.
