PRICE LIST - 1931 The SIMPSON IRIS GARDENS GLEBE ROAD LIVINGSTONE HEIGHTS CHERRYDALE VIRGINIA THE SIMPSON IRIS GARDENS SHIPPING AND PLANTING TIMES Shipping and planting in the spring with us is from about March 20 to May 1; then comes a gap to cover the blooming period when no shipments are made. Summer or fall ship¬ ments begin about June 20 and continue until freezing weather. Spring planting is perfectly safe, though July, August and September are the best months for doing this. These planting times specified as after blooming ones, are probably the best for Virginia and all points north of it. South of this latitude, or in points rather far south, we would plant as soon as possible after blooming or else wait for September or October in order to avoid setting-out at about the times when long hot periods of weather can be expected. VISITORS OF COURSE ARE INVITED DURING THE BLOOMING SEASON. There are a great many more named varieties in the Gardens, on trial, than are given in this Price List, besides hundreds of seedlings. Some will eventually “make the grade” and be listed while others will not! Come and see which of these are worth while. How to reach the Simpson Gardens by automobile: As a rule, make for Washington, D. C., and then cross the Potomac over the Key Bridge, at the south end of which you will be in Rosslyn; get on the Lee Highway here and drive west for three miles until the Glebe Road is crossed (at Lee or Living¬ stone Heights), at which crossing turn north and about 300 yards farther is the site of the gardens. Briefly, the Gardens are three miles from Washington, at Livingstone Heights, corner Glebe Road and Livingstone Avenue, one-half mile west of Cherrydale, Va. Telephone or Telegraph Orders Orders from persons known to us will be accepted by tele¬ phone or telegraph. The phone is via Washington, D. C., “Clarendon 1832.” Telegrams should be addressed, via Wash¬ ington, to “H. P. Simpson, phone Clarendon 1832, Cherrydale, Va.” THE SIMPSON IRIS GARDENS The Varieties Prices are for Simpson Garden size rhizomes as a rule, i. e. with two or more bloom buds on them, which is larger than the standard size almost universally sent out. However, if the variety be scarce the regulation standard size may have to be sent, i. e. a strong single rhizome. No “thumb-nail” sizes are sent out in any case. Prices have been sharply reduced in the case of many of the older or well-known varieties, when three or more of the same kind are ordered. The heights are given in inches and are those of normal bloom stalks as found in the average garden. Do not forget that nearly all yellow varieties and those having a strong yellow strain in them, will grow rather small roots — it’s Nature’s rule and we can’t help it. In such cases we try to make it up by sending extra-bud roots, or more roots than are ordered. This is our way of trying to avoid any kind of a disappointment to a patron. Varieties starred * can only be delivered after blooming. Those marked t are running rather small this season. Afterglow (34 in.) . Albert Victor (36 in.) . Albicans (18 in.) . Alcazar (32 in.) . The prices given are those that prevailed last year and would also this year, if we had large and strong enough ones to send out. In case you have set apart a certain sum for Irises, our ad¬ vice is to purchase fewer varieties, and more of each variety. You will yourself be better pleased in the long run by doing this. Of course expensive kinds may have to be secured one by one, instead of three or more of a kind. Very Brief Descriptions of THE SIMPSON SEEDLINGS Arlington — the general effect is a bright crimson-purple; tall and large. Perhaps the most popular of all our seedlings. $1.00. Aphrojune — bright violet-pink; a lower growing Aphrodite. $1.25. Calebee — a white and lavender plicata with red-brown mark¬ ings on the falls. 60c. Crystaline — blue-white and blue-lavender, with the colors very clean and clear. $1.50. Elfin White — a snow-white small low-growing variety. 75c. Garden Yellow — bright golden yellow. But one root to a cus¬ tomer this year. $1.50. Gamalia — dark violet and dark reddish purple. One of the THE SIMPSON IRIS GARDENS largest Irises grown. $2.50. Kenmore — pale mauve with a touch of light buff; richer than most pale colors. $2.50. Melrose — shades of lavender and purple; large bloom and one of the very best in this color class. 75c. Montpelier — a stately and dignified plicata, that reminds one of the Oncocyclus hybrids. $3.00. Rozanna — a charming blend of lilac, fawn and yellow. $1.50. Senatobia — better shape, darker color and very much of an improvement over Alcazar. $2.00. Topazin — buff or copper-yellow; unusual and attractive in col¬ oring. $2.50.
