The New Red Apples described in the following pages show the way to better apple profits for growers.

These new apples produce a much greater percentage of Extra Fancy fruit due to added color. Extra Fancy is the profit maker.

The Production Manager of the American Fruit Grow¬ ers, Inc., speaking before the Washington State Horticul¬ tural Association, estimated that the additional red color resulting in increased Extra Fancy grade, produced by three of these new varieties would result in an increased per-acre profit to the grower approximately as follows:

RICHARED DELICIOUS— A per acre profit of $030.00 instead of $490.00 — or a net increas¬ ed profit of 28% per acre to the grower.

BLACK JON — That Blackjon— due to earlier color and better shipping and keeping quality, would show a $210.00 per acre profit, as against $70.00 per acre average loss on common Jon¬ athan — actually a difference of $280.00 per acre in favor of Blackjon.

In the development of Richared Delicious, nineteen (19) separate and distinct strains of “red” Delicious were secured and tested. They were all different. Some had no merit — something lacking in SHAPE, COLOR, SIZE, KEEPING QUALITIES, etc. Nothing has been found that equals RICHARED.

Likewise in the development of Blackjon, Miller's Ruby Rome — the most thorough tests were conducted over a period of time — and each variety reproduced through successive generations. Each and every one of these new varieties has been most carefully selected — most thoroughly tested — and conclusively proved as to merit.

A Word of Caution to Planters.

Quality merchandise is often imitated. Various so- called ‘‘red” strains are being offered for sale. The ante¬ cedents of many such “strains” are indefinite — their merits uncertain. Very few, if any, have been submitted to the rigid tests and long periods of actual performance that has placed these new red apples in front rank. Do not be satisfied with something represented “just as good as” — insist upon planting tested, proved varieties, sold under genuine trade-marked names.

These new varieties are being grown by the country's leading fruit growers. They are known and proved for quality and merit and have the endorsement of leading horticultural authorities everywhere.

Nursery Packing Plant

Our new nursery packing house is one of the most modern in the country. It has insulated walls and roof; this enables us to hold nursery stock dormant and in good condition for planting until late in the season, when trees out-of-doors are in full leaf. Here trees and plants are graded and prepared for shipment under the proper con¬ ditions, with every safeguard against exposure or damage.

Information Regarding “Richared Delicious”, “Blackjon” and “Miller’s Ruby Rome Beauty”

RICHARED DELICIOUS is the one improved strain of Delicious that is a “known quantity'” and that HAS MADE GOOD.

Previous to its introduction in the year 1926, Richared had been submitted to rigid tests. It was selected as the most outstanding red strain of Delicious from a total of nineteen separate, distinct types that were tested.

Richared Delicious is the most highly developed, best colored, best keeping strain of Delicious grown. Richared is preferred for commercial orchards by leading apple growers.

Growers who have Richared Delicious in bearing are enthusiastic about its outstanding, early, cherry-red color, and its superior keeping qualities.

RICHARED GROWERS SAY:

BOLLINGER ORCHARDS, Methow, Wash.— “In every way I am pleased with Richared. I feel safe in saying that I will get at least 25% more Extra Fancy Richared than of the old Delicious. I think the bright red of the Richared the most attractive of all red Delicious.”

F. A. SCHELL. — <fFrom my 400 trees top-worked five years ago to Richared Delicious I picked this season 2,400 loose boxes of Richared Delicious apples. These graded out between 98% and 99% Extra Fancy so far as color is concerned and out of the 2,400 boxes there were about 20 boxes that were smaller than size 113s.”

Planters should be very cautious about planting a strain of Delicious sold merely as “Red Delicious.” Num¬ erous so-called “Red Delicious” are offered from various sources. Frequently such strains are of doubtful origin and have not been submitted to the rigid tests necessary to prove their worth.

RICHARED is a definitely proven strain of known merit. Planters purchasing genuine RICHARED trees bear¬ ing the trade-marked RIOHARED label, may be assured of the finest, most highly developed, improved strain of Delicious obtainable.

BLACKJON is a new strain of Jonathan, identical in shape, size, productiveness, etc., with common Jonathan. But Blackjon colors earlier than common Jonathan — and colors approximately 98% Extra Fancy for color, as against approximately only 23% common Jonathan.

Because Blackjon colors earlier, it can be picked when in firm, prime condition, resulting in a better shipping apple and far better quality. Reaching the early markets it brings much better prices.

In an address before the Washington State Horticul¬ tural Association, the Production Manager of the American Fruit Growlers, Inc., stated that returns over the last five- year period showed a return for the first pool of Jonathans of 40c per box more money than for later Jonathans, and further remarked:

“ We are very careful to observe the color of Blackjon at the time of the closing of our first pool and were convinced that all of these apples

could at that time have been marketed in the first pool.”

WHAT OTHER AUTHORITIES SAY ABOUT BLACKJON: F. E. DeSELLEM, Production Manager, Jim Hill Grow¬ ers. — “There is no question in my mind that this im¬ proved Jonathan is going to surpass the ordinary Jon¬ athan, both as to earliness and improved color.”

W. A. LUCE, Orchard Adviser, Earl Fruit Co. — “I be¬ lieve this apple to be a real asset to the fruit industry of the Northwest.”

A. R. CHASE, County Agent. — “This new sport would appear to be as valuable in improving our Jonathan variety as the red strain of Delicious has been in im¬ proving the latter variety.”

EARLY JONATHANS PAY — A prominent Wenatchee, Washington, grower says: “Last season my Delicious crop averaged $1.92 per box, but my EARLY combina¬ tion Jonathans brought me $2.08 per box. Had my Jonathans been Blackjon I could undoubtedly have gotten that price or more for my entire crop.”

For early districts where early apples are profitable, Blackjon is recommended as one of the best in its class.

Miller’s Ruby Rome

The strain of Rome Beauty being offered under the name of Miller’s Ruby Rome is the same that heretofore has been called “Black Rome Beauty.” A number of our patrons as well as Horticulturists have advised a change of name for various well founded reasons. This strain of Rome Beauty has proven to be the best in existence in competition with almost a score of Rome Beauty sports, in texture and color. The color of the Miller’s Ruby Rome strain is a dark ruby red, solid in color, not showing the greenish undertone. Under any conditions this apple ripens to a darker color than the ordinary strain of Rome Beauty. It is this deep color all over that puts the most of the fruit in the Extra Fancy class. Quality is better than the parent Rome Beauty, being finer in texture. In all other respects the tree is typical of the old Rome Beauty, bear¬ ing early, consistently and heavy. All the advantages of the ordinary Rome with the addition of the color. Com¬ mercial orchardists are planting the RUBY ROME in pref¬ erence to all other strains as it is in a class by itself with no competition.

WE MAKE NO GUARANTEE EVERGREENS Wl LL GROW In order to handle Evergreens and Broadleaf Evergreens

in the most satisfactory way, and to better insure their growth, these plants are dug with a ball of earth which is held in place by sewing around it a strip of burlap. In planting, dig a hole large and deep enough to take in the ball and place the plant in its normal position. Cut the top string and roll back the burlap but do not remove it entirely. Work fine dirt around the ball using plenty of water to wash the dirt into all the holes. Cover up to the top of the ground and water frequently. This is the best way to handle this class of plants. These plants have to be grown in the nursery row several years before they are large enough to sell. The extra time required to grow the plants and the work required to dig and prepare for shipment necessitates charging what may seem a high price.

ROSES — Oregon grown

Oregon grown roses are known East and West for their superior blooming quality and hardiness. Our roses are grown on rich, sandy loam, thus securing a particularly fine root system. We ship only one grade, strong 2 year No. 1 Oregon grown bushes. They will bloom the first sea¬ son planted.

When planting, prune the stems back to about six inches. Trim the ends of the roots, leaving a new, clean cut. Plant in roomy hole, with bud or graft about two inches below level of ground. Water well and firm soil about the roots. Then hill the plants up completely, cover¬ ing the tops with soil to prevent them from drying out When the foliage starts gradually* draw the soil away from the stems to a level with the ground.
