Burpee’s Spring Blooming Crocus

Crocus will grow in many places in the lawn, in flower borders, in rock gardens, edge of shrubs, on the slopes of terraces, in sun or shade, and even under trees. The best position is where they will receive the sun for only part of the day.

For Growing in Pebbles and Water

(Large bulbs) The lovely pure white blooms are arranged in clusters of from six to twelve on each stem. Unexcelled for winter blooming in the house. 9459 Soleil D’Or

(Large bulbs) This often is called the “Yellow Paper White” Narcissus. Gives a magnificent display during winter and spring either in bowls or as cut-flowers. 3 for 40?!; 12 for $1.40; 100 for $10.00.

How to Grow Narcissus and Daffodils and when to plant them

For the most satisfactory results, plant Narcissus Bulbs as early in the fall as they can be obtained, because if planted too late, they will not have time to produce sufficient root growth, which is essential to good top growth and flowers in the spring. The bulbs are planted 4 to 8 inches deep and 6 to 10 inches apart according to the size of the bulbs. Planted by them¬ selves in clumps of a dozen bulbs, they are very showy along with your other plants, while a large bed of nothing but Daffodils is very showy. They are es- ' pecially well adapted for naturalizing. In very cold locations after the ground l s frozen hard, cover with leaves, straw or coarse litter from 4 to 6 inches deep.

For house culture in flower pots plant just close enough together so that the bulbs do not touch one another. With the exception of the Rock Garden varieties listed on this page, almost any of our Narcissus or Daffodils may be grown indoors as well as outside. Should further planting directions be desired, ask for our Free Leaflet No. 31— “Bulbs for Winter and Spring Blooming.”

May-Flowering or Old English

Cottage Tulips

Generally speaking, the most permanent of all Tulips, blooming in early May after the Early Singles have passed, hence the name of “May Flowering.” The term “Cottage” is of recent origin and so called because so many were planted around the country homes and cottages of England. As a class they are rich in the more delicate and artistic shades of yellow, orange, fawn, salmon, old rose colors missing to a great extent in other classes of late Tulips. They are as varied in their range of colorings as the Dar¬ wins but more varied in form, being mostly long and oval-shaped, many with gracefully reflexed petals. Stems are long and not as stiff as the Darwins or Breeders. Excellent for cutting and unsur¬ passed for garden decoration and especially for grouping among shrubbery. Except for a few varieties, they are not recommended for growing indoors but should be handled the same as Darwins.

9206 Alaska Pure golden-yellow. Lily-flowered type with slightly reflexing outer segments. Flower long in shape and very attractive; 24 inches. 3 for 300; 12 for 950; 100 for $7.25.

Perhaps the best of all light yellow tulips; 27 inches. 3 for 300; 12 for 950; 100 for $7.25.

9201 ArgO Fine for indoors as well as in the garden. Golden yellow mottled red, changing to reddish brown. This color blends nicely with almost any other color grown, particularly with the lighter shades; 22 inches. 3 for 300; 12 for 900; 100 for $6.50.

9203 Avis Kennicott A beautiful bright chrome yellow with dark base and anthers. The decidedly elongated flowers grow to an immense size. One of the finest and brightest yellow Cottage Tulips. Highly valued for garden display and cutting; 24 inches. 3 for 300; 12 for 900; 100 for $6.75.

9204 Buff Beauty Salmon-rose with petals edged buff on inside. Bud opens scarlet with yellow band. Large, graceful and very fine and should be planted by everyone wanting a Tulip with a distinctive color. A bouquet of Buff Beauty is wonderfully attractive; 20 inches. 3 for 300; 12 for $1.10; 100 for $7.75.

Early Single and Early Double Tulips bloom from two to four weeks earlier than other varieties, and for that reason have always been great favorites for garden display and for cutting. They are equally at home in formal beds or when planted in clumps in the perennial borders. Mostly used for bedding out-of-doors, although they are also unequalled for blooming indoors during the winter.

Burpee’s Showy Hyacinths

Hyacinths are easily grown out-of-doors in beds or borders. Plant the bulbs from 4 to 6 inches deep, according to the texture of the soil. Protect during the winter with a 3-inch layer of straw, leaves, or coarse manure to prevent alternate freezing and thawing of the soil. This covering should be removed promptly with the first warm days of spring. Large beds of Hyacinths always make a fine showing, and clumps of 6 or 8 among the shrubbery or in the perennial border are equally attractive. These Mammoth Size Bulbs are also fine for growing indoors during the winter in pots or pans of soil, or in special Hyacinth glasses filled with water.

9001 Duke of Westminster

An Unusually Fine Selection of this Most Charming Flower

We confidently recommend Duke of Westminster as one of the finest Hyacinths grown today. The prevail¬ ing color is deep purplish blue with large spikes well filled with bells of rich purplish blue with a light center. Equally valuable for forcing and bedding.

9004 Enchantress A lovely variety with attractive long-stemmed flower-spikes. The indi¬ vidual bells are closely set on a strong stem. They are a beautiful light delft-blue shaded with somewhat deeper blue. Valuable for garden dis¬ play and for forcing.

9006 Gertrude Magnificent compact trusses closely set with rich carmine-rose bells. This is the favorite variety for outdoor bedding because the plants make a splendid uniform growth and bloom all at one time. Easily forced.

9007 Grand Maitre a glorious spike of

large bells closely set on a long and strong stem. The color is a rich deep porcelain- blue of unusual appeal. Grand Maitre is equally well suited for outdoor growing and for forcing.

9009 King of the Blues Those who

admire rich deep shades will be particularly pleased with King of the Blues. It is, in our opinion, one of the best belonging to the deep blue class, with elegant, long and graceful spikes.

9014 Lady Derby Clear rich rose-pink

blooms forming a solid and strong spike of color. Grown indoors, the flowers are a shade deeper in color.

9012 La Grandesse An elegant spike closely set with beautiful large bells of a clear waxy white. It is a splendid variety for forcing.

9019 La Victoire One of the earliest of all Hyacinths to come into bloopi. The flowers are a brilliant scarlet-red. When grown indoors, they have a tendency to be lighter.

9023 L’ Innocence Elegant large white

bells gracefully arranged on a strong, heavy stem. It makes a beautiful display and is easily forced.

9016 Lord Balfour An early-flowering Hyacinth and one of the best in its color class. The large, well-formed flowers form a solid truss of lilac- rose, shaded dark violet.

9033 Queen of the Pinks A particu¬ larly lovely rose-pink, forming large broad trusses closely set with good-sized bells. Strong stemmed. Fine for bedding and valuable for late forcing.

9031 Yellow Hammer a good deep

shade of creamy yellow. Yellow Hammer is easily forced and gives elegant long showy flower-spikes. Also suited for outdoors.

Any of the above desirable varieties we offer at the uniform price of:

2H each; 3 for 60£; 12 for $2.20; 100 for $15.00.

The First Flowers of Spring

The early spring flowers always have had a particular appeal to gardeners. Though they are not large, they seem to mean so much to us because they are the first ones. Plant them plentifully: Snowdrops, Scillas, and all the others listed on this and the following pages. Plant some Chionodoxa this year too. They make a splendid show, are perfectly hardy, and will last almost indefinitely. Fritillaria, Grape Hyacinths, and Scilla are seen far too seldom. We know you will like them. And be sure to include some of the Dutch and Spanish Iris and also a few of the Anemones.

Chionodoxa Glory of the Snow

9480 Luciliae Deep blue flowers with a white center. This is a beautiful flower and showy wherever planted. Well-established bulbs furnish a number of flower spikes which carry 4 to 6 blooms each. Plant the bulbs 3 inches deep and 2 inches apart in various locations throughout the garden, particularly in the rockery. They will provide a showy display for many weeks if planted in dif¬ ferent exposures. 12 for 450; 100 for $3.00; 1000 for $25.00.

9481 Sardensis Intense bright blue with a lighter eye. A delightful companion to above, which when planted together make a pleasing contrast. Flowers increase in size each year and should be planted in all rockeries and perennial gardens. 12 for 450; 100 for $3.00; 1000 for $25.00.

Beautiful ROSES for Fall Planting

Fall planting of Roses is highly recommended by many Rose experts. Because the time between digging and planting them has been reduced to a minimum, the vigor and strength of the plants are fully retained. Since Rose plants cannot be sent until late in the season, prepare your bed well and cover it with straw to keep the frost out of the ground until the plants arrive. Full planting instructions are sent with every order.

Perennial Flower Seeds

Perennials are the chief stand-by of the old-fashioned gar¬ dens. They require little attention and respond generously to increased care and thorough cultivation. After once being established they will not only last many years but also in¬ crease in beauty with every season. The seed of perennials may be sown outdoors almost any time of the year.

Summer and fall sowings should be made in specially prepared beds, preferably boxed in with 8- or 10-inch boards and covered with a screen of lath or wide-meshed burlap. During the winter a covering of leaves or strawy manure, after the frost has touched the foliage, is all the protection needed to carry the plants safely through the winter.
