PRICES IN THIS LIST CANCEL ALL PRIOR QUOTATIONS

WITH THE presentation of this, our 193 5 catalog, we wish to take the opportunity to sincerely thank all our many friends and customers for their patronage through the past seasons. We also wish to thank you for your many kind letters, showing satisfaction with bulbs received and service rendered.

In spite of the depression our business has enjoyed a steady increase in volume. Why? Quality of bulbs and service together with reasonable prices is the explana¬ tion. Each year we cut out the varieties that are the least popular and add several new ones that have shown up well in our planting or that have proven their popular¬ ity by opinions that we have received. In short, we sincerely try to keep our list of varieties up to the minute, and do not intend to offer our customers varieties that are not as good as can be had.

THRIPS

There have been very few reports of thrip damage the past season. This shows that the eradication of the pest has become a community project, as it should be, and is swiftly gaining the upper hand. However, we still recommend that you treat all bulbs before planting with some disinfectant, no matter from what source they come. We practice this and believe that it is largely responsible for the remarkable control that we have experienced.

WHAT VARIETIES TO GROW

We recommend that if you are not familiar with the various varieties, follow the symposium of the American Gladiolus Society which is published each year and lists the 50 most popular glads. The popularity is determined by a vote of the mem¬ bership each year.

BULLETINS

Elm Hill Farm maintains a bulletin service which includes answering questions that may not be covered in the following mimeographed bulletins. We have ga¬ thered considerable material for these and think that they will answer many of your questions. All are available free of charge.

No. 1. Outstanding varieties of 193 5.

No. 2. Growing and preparing glads for show.

No. 3. Hints on growing Glads.

No. 4. Common diseases of glads and their control.

No. 5. Thrips and their control.

No. 7. Opportunities for the hybridizer.

SIZE OF BULBS

Large bulbs (L) are sizes No. 1 and No. 2-154 inches in diameter and up, are the best to plant for large bloom. Medium bulbs (M) are sizes No. 3 and No. 4 - % to 1 54 inches in diameter, are the best for commercial planting and for home decora¬ tion. Practically all of them will bloom but will not make as large flowers as Large bulbs will. Small bulbs (S) are sizes No. 5 and No. 6 - under % inches in diameter. These cannot be depended upon to bloom the first year, but are valuable in getting a start in high priced varieties. We do not offer bulblets, as we need all that we have for our own propagation.

GUARANTEE

If any bulbs bought from us do not prove satisfactory in every way, we will cheerfully replace them or refund the purchase price. We cannot in any way be responsible for the crop, as it is influenced by conditions entirely beyond our control.

NEW INTRODUCTIONS FOR 1935

Introducing two miniature decorative gladiolus, bred by Chas. E. F. Gersdorff, after an extensive trial in various parts of the United States, from which praise came without exception. Referred to by Alfred M. S. Pridham as outstanding miniatures. Howard V. Wright, Edgewood, Md. calls them dainty, just the thing for corsage bouquets, small vases and baskets. They are described by Mr. Gersdorff as follows: "Both free in bloom, blooming easily from bulblets, Cistena tallest and branching, to be cut as each branch develops, leaving other branches to develop on the plant as needed. Sunya lower but sometimes with an extra branch. Both fine form and substance; small and dainty on thin wiry stems, making them suitable for bud vases, small baskets, bowls and corsage or other small bouquets. A single spike or branch in a bud vase with a sprig of maiden-hair fern makes an ideal mantle decoration, or one for each dinner plate. Both are early in bloom, but because all bulbs and bulblets bloom eventually, if planted in time, a long season of bloom is had.”

CISTENA

A.G.S. Reg. No. 524. Pinard Yellow with deeper throat, no hidden beauties. Effect; a creamy soft yellow. 52 days from planting May 22, three inches deep. The name is Sioux Indian meaning "baby”.

SUNYA

A.G.S. Reg. No. 490. Deep rose doree, bases of lower petals pinard yellow lightly speckled rose doree Effect; a light pure red with soft creamy yellow throat speckled light pure red. 62 days from planting May 22, three inches deep. Name of a pygmy man.

These were too far advanced to show at the glad show this season but every one who attended the banquet of the Ohio State Gladiolus Society in Ravenna last August will remember the favorable com¬ ment on the buttonhole corsages, made from these two varieties, furnished with the compliments of the Ohio Edison Co. These were registered in the fall of 1927, giving further evidence of the thorough trial they have been given before offering them to a beauty loving public at prices within the reach of all. Both are priced the same.

Each 35c, less than 10 at single rate. 10 for $2.00, 50 for $9.00 as long as stock permits.

NOTICE

TO DEALERS AND JOBBERS: A large share of these varieties are available in sizable quantities. Send your want list for quotations.

GLADIOLUS SOCIETIES

If at all possible you should join a Gladiolus Society. There are a number of these in the country - local, state, and national. We especially invite you to join the Ohio Gladiolus Society. The cost is one dollar ($1) per year or two dollars ($2) which in¬ cludes affiliation with the American Gladiolus Society and a subscription to the Glad¬ iolus Review, a monthly publication which is very instructive. Send fee to Mrs. Carl Defendiefer, Secy., 3 3 Lyons Blvd., Struthers, Ohio or send it to us and we shall for¬ ward it.

With each new membership sent through us we will give free five bulbs of either Cistena or Sunya, Mr. Gersdorff’s new miniatures. We must limit this to twenty-five sets to be given out, when they are gone we will include some other good varieties to the value of one dollar.

THE LATCH STRING IS OUT

We welcome visitors to our farm home. Flower and Garden Clubs are especially welcome. If you come in a group it would be well to let us know a day or so in ad¬ vance, that we may be prepared to conduct your group as soon as you arrive, other¬ wise there might be some delay.

Sincerely,

R. C. BELLARD JOHN K. BELLARD.

We hold a membership in the following Glad Societies: American Gladiolus Society, New England Gladiolus Society, Ohio Gladiolus Society, Mahoning Gladiolus Society; John K. Bellard, President, Ohio State Gladiolus Society.
